Hillel Day school of North Miami Beach held a Menorah lighting ceremony on Thursday, highlighting the students’ favorite Jewish heroes.
In preparation for the event, students wrote about a hero who brought light into their life and the world.
At the event, Jewish figures who the students picked as heroes of today were honored with lighting the Menorah.
These included Shliach Rabbi Sholom Ber Lipskar of the Shul of Bal Harbour, Channel 7 news reporter Rosh Lowe, Chaplain Col. Jacob Goldstein, Telemundo Spanish language sportscaster Andres Cantor and author and Holocaust survivor Israel Sachs.
Over 1500 students attended the lighting ceremony, with performances by the school’s students choir and strings program.
Hillel Jewish day school is the nation’s only Jewish day school to receive the Blue Ribbon school of excellence award in 2011, and Florida’s first Jewish International Baccalaureate World School (IB).
