My Extended Family, which supports children from single-parent homes, hosted a special basketball clinic led by former pro player Tamir Goodman, often hailed as the “Jewish Jordan.” Kids from Crown Heights, Five Towns, Flatbush, and Teaneck, divisions gathered to learn basketball skills, but also left with powerful lessons on bitachon, resilience, and self-worth.
The clinic began with a video showcasing highlights from Goodman’s career, capturing moments from his high school stardom to his time as a professional player in Israel. Goodman’s journey, grounded in his unwavering Yiddishkeit, set the tone for his message to the kids: “Real success is about staying true to who you are and never giving up, even when the world tells you otherwise.”
Tamir’s opening address struck a deep chord with the young participants, many of whom related to his struggles and triumphs. “Growing up, I faced a lot of obstacles,” he shared. “But with true bitachon, hard work, and a strong support system, you can overcome anything. I see each of you as champions, not just on the court but in life.” Tamir’s words were especially meaningful for many of these kids, who find strength, stability and mentorship through the programs My Extended Family offers.
“Avi, an 11-year-old from Teaneck, shared, ‘I didn’t know someone like Tamir ever struggled. Hearing his story made me think just because things are really hard, I didn’t pick this, Hashem did and I can still be an MVP.”
Throughout the clinic, Tamir worked closely with the kids on basketball fundamentals—dribbling, shooting, and passing—while emphasizing teamwork and the importance of supporting one another. “You don’t need to be the tallest or the fastest to be a great player,” he reminded them. “Just give it your best shot, every time.”
Parents were also grateful for the opportunity, especially as many of them rely on My Extended Family to provide positive role models for their children. “My son came home inspired,” shared a mother from Crown Heights. “As a single mom, I can’t always give him the male role models he needs, but My Extended Family fills that gap. He left the clinic with new confidence and a huge smile.”
Sruli Lebovic, program director of My Extended Family’s Crown Heights boys division, described the clinic’s impact: “Events like this do more than teach basketball skills—they remind our kids that they have a community that believes in them. It’s a place where they can truly thrive, a program parents deeply appreciate and kids eagerly look forward to every week.”
The day ended with a Q&A session, where kids asked Tamir questions about his career, his faith, and even his favorite moves on the court. “Stay humble, stay grounded, and always give your best—those are the real keys to success,” he advised a curious young participant.
Reflecting on the experience, Tamir expressed his admiration for My Extended Family’s mission. “What My Extended Family does for these kids is truly incredible,” he said. “To have a support network like this, a place where they can feel seen, heard, and supported—that’s a gift. I’m honored to be part of it, even for just a day.”
“What made the clinic so powerful was how it fit seamlessly into what we do every week,” said Mendel Fisher, program director of My Extended Family’s Crown Heights boys division. “Tamir showed the kids how to push through challenges and see their own potential—lessons that resonate far beyond the basketball court.”
The clinic was yet another reminder of how My Extended Family continues to be a pillar of strength, helping kids tap into their resilience, one event at a time.
My Extended Family has a weekly after school program in Crown Heights, bringing together 85 children, each matched with a caring big brother or sister. The program offers dinner, homework support, sports, art projects, and plenty of fun activities.
