Interview with Malka Touger: Author of “More Than Meets the Eye”
Initial Inspiration:
Q: What was the defining moment or experience that inspired you to write ‘More Than Meets the Eye,’ and how has your personal journey influenced your perspective on tznius?
A: I felt that there was a need to expand an understanding of tznius beyond clothing and appearances. People continually say that they felt that there was more to the subject than hemlines and tight pants and they wanted to know.
I recognized that we should do more teaching than preaching and asked teachers if that could be implemented, they replied that there is not enough material on the subject of tznius. During the Covid years, when I was not traveling to speak, I decided to do some research. I was inspired by the wealth of material that exists but has not been collected in one volume.
Cultural Interpretations:
Q: In your book, how do you address the varying cultural interpretations and practices of tznius across different Jewish communities, and what challenges did you face in presenting a comprehensive view?
A: This is a book on hashkafah. The cultural interpretations and practices are taught (or should be) in halachah classes and there may be variations of that in each culture and community. The hashkafah is source based and appropriate for all.
Contemporary Relevance:
Q: How do you think the principles of tznius are relevant in the modern world, especially in an era dominated by social media and rapidly shifting fashion trends?
A: The approach to tznius as a way of life and not merely measurements of attire; is a timeless Torah principle. Quite the contrary, as already in practice for many Torah classes, we can harness these platforms to spread this approach.
Particularly in the present age, when the diversity of lifestyles is a theme continually emphasized and social media allows every person’s individual voice to be heard, there is a growing opportunity to communicate the eternally relevant message of tznius.
Only for Women?
Q: Your book delves into the topic of tznius primarily from a female perspective. How do you think tznius applies to men, and what role do gender dynamics play in the understanding and practice of tznius?
A: To be honest, the book was originally written using female and male pronouns because the principles and teachings found in our sources apply to both men and women. I think that it is wrong to categorize tznius solely as a woman’s domain. Perhaps some of the editorial changes were made with the assumption that more women than men would read this book.
The idea of enabling one’s soul to navigate our lives – as that is the tzanua element of our selfhood, finding the right balance between body and soul, viewing our responsibility to our appearance in any given surroundings and many more ideas and teachings are applicable to men and women alike.
Educational Approach:
Q: What approach do you recommend for educating young people about tznius in a way that is respectful, empowering, and relevant to their lives?
A: Discussing the topic of tznius should not cause discomfort to educators. It is a vital Torah ideal as any other Jewish value, if not more.
This book provides much informative, engaging and thought-provoking material about tznius that can be age appropriate adopted. Even the very notion of designating time in a busy school schedule, can send a powerful message of the relevance and importance of tznius. And all of us, teachers, parents and other influencers should strive to walk our talk and model a living example of tznius.
Numerous people in the educational field were consulted while composing this book with thought about a future curriculum based upon its material. With this in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sarah Michal Touger, a talented educator whose creativity and teaching skills contributed to the development of the book content.
As a prelude to this envisioned curriculum, teachers can meantime use the book’s content to prepare their lessons. In addition, I offer an age-appropriate power point accompanied lecture, which can serve as a welcome introduction or summary to the study of tznius.
Historical Evolution:
Q: How has the emphasis of conveying the message of tznius evolved throughout Jewish history, and what historical events or shifts do you believe have been most influential in shaping contemporary attitudes towards modesty?
A: In previous eras, the message was taught by the society at large. To a certain extent even in secular society – and surely in the shtetl communities of Eastern Europe, in general people conformed to tznius attire. As our people confronted secular trends, the subject had to be taught. Since hamaaseh hu haikar, “action is most essential,” many put an emphasis on dress codes. But today we have to build upon that and teach the motivating principles for a tznius lifestyle. This book is a first of its kind attempting to actually bring about a greater understanding and hopefully more positive attitude towards tznius.
Personal Stories:
Q: Can you share a particularly powerful story or anecdote from your research that illustrates the impact of tznius on an individual’s life?
A: I shy away from the typical inspiring articles, books and stories that depict situations where an individual adhered to halachic requirements of tznius and that eventuated in grace from Above. In my opinion that can be disheartening when there is no apparent “happy end’.
I do include some examples in the book as they are based in Torah sources.
The most inspiring story for me is the repetitive “modern day story” – remarks from people who read the book or participated in a workshop and commented: “I never thought the topic of tznius can be so interesting, intellectually stimulating and thought provoking.
Criticism and Misconceptions:
Q: What are some common misconceptions or criticisms about tznius that you address in your book, and how do you respond to them?
A: Many people state: “tznius is all about necklines, sleeves and tight clothing (for men and women…).” The chapter on clothing is number seven, intentionally chosen as a later topic of discussion to create a setting and foundation for this aspect of tznius.
A common complaint is: “Stop judging my externals. It’s what’s inside that counts.”
Or: ““Why should my appearance in public be my responsibility? If someone has a problem, it’s theirs not mine.”.”
And: “Tznius seems to come easier for some people but not for me.”
There are no one line answers to these issues. That’s why I collected material until I had enough for a book that addresses these statements.
Intersection with Secular Views:
Q: How does your book bridge the gap between traditional Jewish views of tznius and secular perspectives on modesty and self-expression?
A: This should not be seen as a “gap” as if it is some dividing line we acknowledge but inward are uncomfortable with and would like to do away with. The idea that our neshamos have been sent into this world to express the G-dly element which is their essence, calls forth self-expression. An informed understanding of tznius can help us navigate our paths and succeed in our mission.
Future of tznius:
Q: Looking forward, how do you envision the future of tznius within the Jewish community, and what changes or developments would you like to see?
A: We, parents, teachers, speakers, educators, anyone, would not feel intimidated to bring up this subject despite the unfortunate negativity that prevails in discussing the topic of tznius. Baruch HaShem, there is an abundance of available material to study, share and empower us to speak to and teach others.
We should not feel judged for not having perfected our own lifestyle of tznius while sharing or commenting on the topic. As more of us join in attempting to create a greater awareness and understanding of tznius we can enable it to become a comfortable topic of discussion as well as implementation in our lives.
As the present war in Eretz Yisrael rages, heightening our understanding of tznius will beh draw down HaShem’s promise for protection ה’…מתהלך במבחניך להצילך ולא יהיה בך ערות דבר, “HaShem accompanies [you] in the midst of your camp, to save you and to deliver your enemies before you.”
“More Than Meets the Eye”“ is not just a book; it’s a movement towards a deeper, more inclusive understanding of Tznius. Join countless others who have discovered the transformative power of Tznius through the pages of this groundbreaking work. Nice to see you active and creative. no surprise there. wishing you much success. btw, in Pireck Shira, we learn about different middot from animals…I love cats, yes, more the exception than the rule. nevermind. learning tzinus from a cat is something to emulate..they are clean, tidy, quiet, modest, undemanding and their ability to be patient, is something to learn from. we would all be much better people incorporating some of these characteristics……….as we know tzinus is much more than long sleeves and high necklines. hope all is well.
