In an important step forward in the fight against hate crimes, Florida House Bill 269 recently passed with overwhelming support. The bill, sponsored by Representative Mike Caruso and Representative Randy Fine, seeks to strengthen laws against antisemitic acts in the state of Florida. On Thursday, April 27 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law in Israel.
Under the provisions of House Bill 269, anyone who vandalizes or damages religious cemeteries, projects images of religious animus onto a property without permission, or harasses others because of their religious-based garments can now be charged with a third-degree felony. This bill was an essential step to protect the Jewish community against hate crimes and to send a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated in Florida.
Chabad of Tallahassee & FSU were honored to be a part of the advocacy efforts for the passing of Florida House Bill 269, which combats antisemitism in the state. Members and students at Chabad of Tallahassee & FSU meeting with legislators and testifying on behalf of the bill were key components in making this legislation a reality.
Florida House Bill 269 is an important step in the right direction in protecting vulnerable communities against hate crimes. The bill sends a clear message that such acts of hate will not be tolerated and will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The Jewish community is grateful to Representative Mike Caruso, Representative Randy Fine and to the legislature for their support and recognition of the importance of fighting against antisemitism.
