Mrs. Hinda (Hilda) Witkes, a long time resident of Worcester, Massachusetts, and member of the Jewish community there, passed away on Wednesday, 17 Adar 5777.
She was 98.
Born in Worcester, she and her husband, Moshe Witkes were members of the Yeshiva Achei Tmimim Academy in Worcester which was established by the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
After her husband tragically passed away in 1966, she was left to care for her 4 young children, which she did so with great Mesiras Nefesh. She had been a teller at the Worcester County National Bank for many years.
Her friendly demeanor, warm smile, and witty sense of humor touched all whom came in contact with her. She was affectionately known to the whole community as “Bubby Witkes.”
She merited to see 3 generations and live a full, happy life surrounded by her family. “It was so moving,” said one of her grandchildren, “to have 27 of her family members surrounding her for the megillah reading by night and day in her room this Purim, shortly before her passing.”
She was an active volunteer for the blind, transcribing and reading Braille, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported.
She is survived by her children: David Witkes of Worcester, Massachusetts; Reuven Witkes of Crown Heights; Ruth Witkes of Lynn, Massachusetts; Yechezkel (Gary) Witkes of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
