A dollar bill from the Rebbe that was passed on to the Shalit family as a merit for their captive son has been photographed by Yediot Aharonot, Israel’s largest daily newspaper, at the Shalit’s home in Mitzpeh Hilah.
Mrs. Aviva Shalit received the dollar just before Pesach this year from Mrs. Chana Canterman, Shlucha in the Talbiyeh neighborhood in Jerusalem, with the hope of hearing good news from their son Gilad Shalit who was was captured by Hamas terrorists in 2006.
As first reported on COLlive.com, Canterman got the dollar from the Rebbe on 20 Tishrei 5751. Upon receiving the dollar from Canterman, Aviva Shalit had the dollar laminated and placed it in her pocketbook, carrying it with her at all times. Two decades after Canterman received it from the Rebbe, on 20 Tishrei 5772, Gilad was released.
Canterman received the dollar from the Rebbe as a young girl from England spending the Tishrei month in Crown Heights. After saying a sicha and davening Maariv on Tuesday, Tishrei 20, the Rebbe gave out dollars for charity.
In Yediot’s photo of the dollar, Canterman’s hand-written note on the dollar can be seen recording the date “L.H.U. Chana Rutman 2(1) Tishrei 5751 (Tuesday) Wednesday.”
“At first I had written Tuesday, 20 Tishrei, (in black ink) and later added Wednesday, and added an aleph (for 21) (in blue ink),” Canterman recalls, “as the dollars were given after nightfall, and according to the Jewish calendar, it was in fact already considered the next day.”
In conversation with Chana Canterman this week, Mrs. Shalit mentioned that it was interesting that both Tuesday and Wednesday were written on the dollar, since Gilad was released on Tuesday, but did not arrive home until after nightfall, which is when the celebrations took place.
The book “Yoman Arenu Niflaos” from Tishrei 5751, (see pages below) describes how the Rebbe spoke on that day about the uniqueness of Tuesday which was called twice ‘ki tov,’ and also about increasing our simcha – joy to great heights.
It was following that sicha that the Rebbe gave out two dollars to each person present.
“Little did I dream that I would be parting with one of those dollars one day, and that it would end up somewhere in the very North of Israel close to the Lebanese border, with the Shalits, in Mitzpeh Hila,” said Canterman.
Muslims first thing they did when they were released was to bow down at their mosques yet this shalit guy cannot show a little respect just for the moment & wear a yarlmuka?.Just a little respect to show the world that now he is free as a Jew.Never understand these Israelies & their total disregard of their own religion.
What an amazing story.thanks to the rebbe who always watches over am israel.
i really can not believe it!!!
WHAT ABOUT YONATHAN POLLARD????????????????/
you are soo SWEET! Its inspiring to hear that young kids are interested on Gilad Shalit! Keep on! All simjes!
In the sicha the Rebbe is giving out dollars to Tankistin and he ask someone if he’s a Tankist. Gilad was part of a Tank Crew
I think we’ve forgotten Pollard in all this as well…
Nonetheless, I think the Shalits have full rights to this specific dollar. It seems to have been meant for them.
Please be mispallel for the immediate cherus of R. Sholom Mordechai ben Rivka and R. Yankev Yosef ben Raizel and sof golus. #4 read my mind but the Rebbe from Lubavitch obviously had someone in mind and it went where it went. Now we need a yeshuah for these two Yidden.
I know personally of so many people who she has helped in Israel, what a zechus. Her husband Eli is a also amazing, he has taken total misnagdim and turned them around to love the Rebbe.
Please try and ask them to return it to Canterman so she can lend it to Sholom M. Rubashkin, who knows the brocho might help him too.
It is so inspiring to hear stories about Gilad shalit. Hashem should continue to protect him and keep all the Jewish people safe.
After reading this and seeing the dollar with the date, I am even more amazed at the whole story! How inspiring! “ashreinu ma tov chelkeinu”
and inspiring!
