NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban hosted a swearing-in ceremony for Devorah Halberstam as she was reappointed Honorary Commissioner of Community Safety.
The ceremony was held on Friday March 1, 2024, in the Office of the Police Commissioner in NYPD Headquarters. This event was held immediately after Mayor Eric Adams spoke at the 30th anniversary ceremony of the murder of Ari Halberstam in a terrorist attack on the Brooklyn Bridge.
Also attending the swearing-in ceremony was Brooklyn South Chief Charlie McEvoy, Community Affairs Chief Richie Taylor, 71 Precinct Commander Deputy Inspector Tommy Smith, Community Affairs Lieutenant Ira Jablonsky, 71 Precinct Sergeant Mike Baratta, and Community Affairs Officers Tommy Gallina, John Connors, and Nick Skomina.
Also on Friday, the New York Field Office of the FBI honored the memory of Ari Halberstam with a statement on the X social media site:
“On March 1, 1994, 16-year-old Ari Halberstam was murdered in a terrorist attack on the Brooklyn Bridge. Following his murder, his mother, Devorah Halberstam, committed herself to the fight against terrorism. She was presented with the Director’s Community Leadership Award in 2009 and is recognized throughout the law enforcement community as a vital asset in our fight against terrorism. Today, we join our community to honor Ari’s memory.”
