An armed thief who tried to rob an Israeli diplomat last week in front of the Chabad House in Quito, Ecuador, was taken by surprise by some tough resistance and was forced to flee his planned crime scene.
The Israeli Consul General and some of his staff came to Chabad last Sunday to celebrate Purim with their family members, friends and the Jewish community.
Chabad Shliach Rabbi Tomer Rotem and his wife Rivka welcomed the guests, and began the festivities with the reading of the Megillah and celebrating at the Purim party.
One of the Israeli Embassy diplomats stepped outside to chat with some local Jews, when a car suddenly drove up near the sidewalk and a man with a gun jumped out, shouting in Spanish “robbery!”
While the diplomat kept his cool, his security guard thought it was a terror attack, and shot at the thief.
A gun fight followed. The diplomat managed to escape and the Jews standing near him were not hurt.
Ecuador police were called but the thief fled the area in a backup vehicle.
Rabbi Rotem advised the Israeli to bless Hagomel, thanking Hashem for saving him from any fatal consequences.
A source in Israel’s Foreign Ministry told a COL reporter: “It was a Purim miracle. It could have ended with a very different outcome.”
