When Jewish kids and teenagers from Brazil have winter vacation in July, they all know that going to the Mega Shabbaton in Caconde is a guarantee for the most awesome time ever.
It’s the 8th year that the shabbaton, run by Shluchim Noach and Pessy Gansburg gathers over 150 kids from many different backgrounds and schools, from all over the country, to join the camp which is divided in two separate sessions, one week for the boys, and one week for the girls.
Every day at the Mega Shabbaton in Caconde is action packed, with radical activities full of adrenaline and exciting activities. Cascading (rapelling down a waterfall), horseback riding, white water rafting, camping, and ziplining were just some of the activities they got to do.
Much work goes into putting together the best team of Madrichim and Madrichot to ensure that the kids have an excellent time, while also ensuring that it is a meaningful experience, enriching the children with a strong Jewish identity. Throughout the week the kids had a chance to experience Judaism in a practical and fun way.
Shabbos was no doubt the highlight of the week. Being that most of the kids attend secular schools, for many it was the first time they were keeping a full Shabbos.
The Tzivot Hashem program kept the kids inspired and involved, with many prizes to motivate them to use every free moment to study some more. Many children came away inspired to start keeping more Mitzvot. While some decided to start saying Modeh Ani in the morning, others decided to start washing negel vasser, putting on Tefilin, or joining a Torah class to learn how to be a better Jew. As one camper, Rebeca Fisher who comes from Angra dos Reis, a city without a minyan of Jews, said, “For some of you this might be a week of amazing activities and new friendships, but for me it is the only week of the year I really feel Jewish.”
From the moment camp ends, the children keep in touch with their friends and counselors, counting the days till the next adventure begins again.

I was a counselor there about 10 years ago. I have yet to see a program or camp that comes anywhere close to what Rabino Noach and Dona Pessy have going on in Brasil. The care they show for every child… as if he or she were there very own. As I think of my experience with them in Brasil, I owe them a thank you, for all though they may think that I did them a favor by volunteering for their camp (summer and winter) and helped them with many shabbos meals, I think i gained far more by… Read more »
