I have watched my daughters struggle to breath. I stood by as they were wheeled into emergency rooms attached to oxygen masks and IV fluids. It doesn’t get easier; on the contrary, the fear deepens every time. At an early age my daughters were diagnosed with food allergies. Food allergies affect one in every thirteen children in the USA and the statistics are growing at an alarming rate.
The time has come to bring a greater awareness of this life threatening condition to our community.
An allergic reaction occurs when the body perceives a harmless protein as foreign and attacks it unnecessarily. A potentially fatal reaction is called anaphylaxis. When anaphylaxis occurs, a shot of epinephrine must be administered immediately and the patient must be taken to the hospital. Time is of essence.
Reactions are unpredictable; there is no way of knowing how bad a reaction will be. This past summer a thirteen year old girl in California with a peanut allergy bit into a rice crispy treat, unaware that there was peanut butter inside. She went into anaphylactic shock. Her father (a doctor) immediately gave her multiple Epi-Pens. Unfortunately they were unable to stop the reaction. Her parents watched helplessly as her airways closed up and she died.
There is no cure for food allergies; prevention is the only way to protect a child from getting a fatal reaction. Obviously, I read ingredients carefully and keep all allergens away from my children. There is however, the constant concern of cross contamination. My daughter ate a chocolate from a candy store. We then saw her rolling on the floor in distress. We also noticed that she was wheezing heavily. The chocolate had apparently come into contact with an allergen at some point and caused a severe reaction.
My daughters’ schools are constantly on alert. Both “All My Children” on Ford Street and at Mosdos have been very supportive and understanding. The directors, teachers and kitchen staff go out of their way to ensure that our children remain in a safe environment, while participating in all class activities. Mosdos went to the extent of making their school a “Nut Sensitive” environment (Ford Street is also “Nut Sensitive”).
I understand that this change may have been difficult for some teachers, students and parents. However even an innocent smudge of peanut butter on any surface, could potentially send my daughter into anaphylactic shock. I am thankful that they have taken measures to keep my daughters safe.
One sunny day I took my girls to a local park. My daughter made fast friends with some of the other children there. While they were playing, one of the mothers came over with a snack and gave some to each of the children, including my allergic daughter! I ran over quickly and discovered that thank G-D it was a safe snack. I thanked the mother for the snack while explaining that my daughter has severe food allergies and in future it would be advisable to ask parents before handing out snacks to little children.
My purpose in penning this article is to bring awareness to the community. Please don’t offer food to a child without asking the parent or caregiver first. Please don’t leave Bamba wrappers on the floor. If a child has a food allergy, take them seriously. If they say they don’t feel good, or their mouth feels funny, get medical help immediately!
There is an ancient proverb that “It takes a village to raise a child”. Today it takes a community to keep a child safe.
I have three children who are highly allergic to dairy and nuts. We live in Israel. There is a treatment that helped my son get over his peanut allergy and my other son who has a dairy allergy can now tolerate 60 ml of milk. This treatment is in Asaf Harofeh hospital near rechovot. It’s called oral immunotherapy- the children are given miniscule amounts of the allergen and slowly build up tolerance. This can take a few months or a few years depending on how the body reacts. It’s done in the hospital so that if they have a reaction… Read more »
I have an highly allergic child who receives a full time health para in CH. Health paras are available and very important. Horizon healthcare is the agency I use and the number is 516-326-2020. May everyone be healthy and well.
A Naet practitioner told me they do not treat a anaphylactic allergy! Not so simple! Would be amazing if there was a cure.
from a concerned parent
I have a adult child highly allergic to all dairy, we went to NYC to do the Naet testing, we did many many tests and after about a year he said to me, i have never had a child that i went so far but it does not work for your child, she was still highly allergic to all dairy, a thought maybe a little less since she got married, but when she had kids and gave them milk and she got the allergic reaction, so the doctor said NO DAIRY IN YOUR HOUSE.
I think there is a whole lot of peanut and nut awarenrss out there….try telling people that the smell of pineapple can kill you. Or eggs and milk can kill you. FTR, any food can kill the.right person. My family deals.with anaphylactic allergies to eeggs dairy, pineapple, sesame,.peanut and treenut. I am not minomizing your pain, I’ve been in the same situation more times then I care to count. But nuts and peanuts are the least of my worries, people usually think before giving that out. No pne thinks.before offerin ice cream, ir button candy, or cake. I find the… Read more »
I never understood why the local boys and girls Chabad school here in Miami is not nut free. There are more then 3 kids that I as a parent am aware if that have peanut allergies that are life threatening. Something not to hard as growing up most bakeries and schools as well as camps in Toronto ate nut free
I don’t understand your point. Yes, some children go out of town. But if administrators are going to allow that, then it IS their responsibility to ensure a safe environment. If they can not attain that level of safety, then they should not ever accept a student with allergies.
when my children with peanut allergies fly l always request a peanut free flight. airlines take it seriously. Even so on one flight my peanut sensitive child smelled someone eating a peanut snack three rows ahead. If your child is anaphlaxic l would make sure an appropriate announcement is made when people are seated.
She does wear a bracelet but people need to be aware and know what it is there for. Especially educators and people who are around children need to hear this
Amen!!! My daughter is also allergic to nuts and peanuts. Not enough awareness, I wrote articles in our local papers in the 5 towns, but it still seems to be overlooked. I just ordered her a medic alert bracelet that she wears, but she is only 3.5. It’s so hard, when I am not there 24/7! I encountered so many Bamba eating kids who’ve tried to share. She is young but always asks if things have nuts or peanuts (even things I myself give her!) I am happy about that thank god I think she realizes.
I had the same ? and asked them and they said (delta) that they are going to stop giving out nuts.
Please don’t call this “food allergies”. Call it “nut allergies”.
Food allergies can include many things – milk, eggs, wheat…
Some of these allergies are serious and some “just” cause a rash. But to say that you are talking about “food allergies” when most of your letter is only about nut allergies is very misleading, especially since nut allergies are generally the most severe of the lot.
P.S. – As long as we’re on this soapbox, kids with asthma walk around everyone. How come we haven’t banned smoking in the streets yet?
Thank you for posting this article. Many people do not understand the real danger that food allergies present to those who suffer from a food allergy, as well as the numerous foods that contain a child’s allergen. I applaud all the schools, camps, teachers, counselors, parents and caregivers who work hard with our children to ensure they are safe and make them feel included, especially when so many activities involve food. I know it’s a lot of extra effort on your part, but it is greatly appreciated.
the cookies often given in schools for snack are alomost all made with nuts
Are you kidding me…? Where do you get your deep knowledge of allergies from…?!
Some children with severe allergies are sent to out of town schools. That is a lot of responsibility to ask of that administration…..
PLEASIE SEND YOUR ARTICLE TO AIRLINES – I NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY NOWADAYS WITH SO MANY PEANUT ALLERGIES, THEY SERVE NUTS ON SOME PLANES.
ALSO, SHULS SHOULD BE NUT FREE- WHY SHOULD THESE CHILDREN HAVE TO BE SO CAREFUL EVEN IN A SHUL?
thank you for this important information!
Thank u for the info. Never realized the extent of this problem. Will be more careful!
My son also has a nut allergy. His is not so severe although when not treated immediately with antihistamine it has led to anaphylaxis. I am one of the lucky ones B”H. A silly addition here – we must of course always check for allergies, but one of my son’s anaphylactic reactions was from a peanut butter cookie. I did not recognize it when he was eating it because it did not have the familiar pattern on the top. It is silly, but that would have helped me get help quicker if I realized immediately what he was eating. May… Read more »
my child was diagnosed with food allergies at the age of 6 weeks. before getting immunized.
the cause is still being studied and until there is conclusive evidence, its impossible to know what the cause of allergies is.
allergies are caused by vaccinations antibiotics low immune system- when the body is overwhelmed with stuff it doesnt know how to handle will cause regular foods to become allergic too. Deal with the cause too…and get your body balanced out so it can handle what is put into it… Also digestion issues can come from diffiencies…
I have personally done for dairy intolerance neat – with an excellent chiropractor he said you need to do a few times for it to have permanent affect. One or two times is not enough. It took away all my symptoms. In other words no cramps no diarreaa I was able to eat dairy without the side affects. In regards to lifethreatening if you want it not to be life threatening then do neat. One time may not be enough. And stay away from that food too if life threatening at least if its by mistake eaten the side affects… Read more »
Thanks so much for sharing your story…I have a son w/a PA and have the same concerns. Your point about random people giving food to kids they don’t know is valuable too. I watch my son like a hawk now but there might be a day when I can’t see everything and more non-allergy-kid parents need to know this.
Results from NAET depend on how well trained the practitioner is. It works iof done properly.
my child is anaphlactic to dairy, i tried naet, the practitioner supposedly ‘cured’ it after multiple visits and told me to go home and feed my child the allergen! I went directly to our gp and took a skin prick test and a blood test- my kid reacted severely to the skin test and the blood showed the allergy still there. My child is still severely allergic and gets anaphlactic reactions when exposed. NAET is not safe for severe allergy nor does it lessen the severity. It was a waste of a lot of time and money.
KA”H we have 3 children. Unfortunately 2 of them have multiple food allergies, this has been detected from about 8 weeks of age through blood tests, baring in mind they both nursed from the mother, bottles out of the question as dairy and soya were not an option to them. Even if the mother eats the foods whilst she is still pregnant it doesn’t make the baby desensitized to the allergens.
Any parent who has a child with a life threatening allergy and does not spend the time getting NAET treatment for their child is being an irresponsible parent.
The NAET treatment is not painful (unlike allergy testing) and it DOES bring the child/adult to a safe level if there is contact.
Physicians do not learn about these treatments, so they of course will tell you not to go. But, you have nothing to lose and SO much to gain.
I live out of town and there is a fatally allergic 2nd grader. Before school started posters were hung with her picture and reminders of all the things no one would think has peanuts. All the kids are sensitive to her needs. We have to send breakfast, lunch and snacks and manage to be peanut sensitive. VERY IMPORTANT: The school sent a list of seemingly peanut free snacks to raise awareness. Nature Valley granola bars contain nut flour. Many pecan flavored foods are actually made with a drop of pecans and due to there high cost, the rest is actually… Read more »
I live in Los Angeles and my son has severe allergies. I have extreme Hakaros Hatov and want to thank the Garden School and Cheder Menachem for always making sure my son is safe as well going out of their way at events to make sure they have food that he can have. I have looked into NAET. It seems to do lots of wonderful things but its for people who have an allergy in the form of getting stomach aches, eczema to their skin and not feeling well due to that food. They usually remove the food that you… Read more »
to #9 and #21. I did Naet for 6 months. I was “made unallergic to many of my allergies. Unfortunately it was not so. When i met with a acupuncturist who deals with allergies, I was retested and was allergic to all the allergies that Naet supposedly cured me of. Bh it was not life threatening allergies, Please mothers as one who did Naet, and acupuncture, please be careful. It does not always work and especially for life threating allergies. Dont take a chance with your child’s life.
it definitely is very real. look into it, youll be surprised.
It is wonderful to hear that both All My Children’s schools were sensitive to your children’s needs. They are to be commended!
Thank you for the information. I think every parent in your children’s schools should also get a copy! And both schools must be nut free or dairy free or sensitive as they call it. It is their liability if they are not doing 100% to safeguard your children. Also, I’m sure you have thought this one through many times but anything from any store or facility that is not completely nut or dairy free is suspect and I wouldn’t take the risk. I’m thinking of the candy store example. The risk of eating from a candy store is way too… Read more »
It is not in any way “part of standard medicine”. It is exactly as fake as all the other “new age” irrational kishuf that pass as “alternative medicine”. There has never been a double blind study that verified acupuncture’s claims.
acupuncture is as real as real doctors- though i dont know where they stand in regards to allergies- they are part of standard medicine and not part of the ‘energy healers’ or the likes. most regular doctors will recommend acupuncture for certain situations and it has helped millions.
My entire family used NAET and its relative, Bioset, and the treatment really does work. We have gotten rid of a bunch of our allergies. None were life-threatening, but I can tell you that the treatment really does work. We are very fortunate to have such an advanced treatment available. During treatment It is not necessary for the child to touch the item that causes the allergy. There is an NAET practitioner here in CH and a Bioset practitioner in Manhattan.
“Nut sensitive” vs. “nut free”?
Schools always want to do the best for their student, but no matter how hard they try, they cannot guarantee a “nut free” environment in a school. Mistakes are bound to happen. Therefor, for legal reasons, school will say that they are “nut sensitive” or “nut aware” as apposed to “nut free” to cover their back.
When a school becomes nut free, they say they are clear but nut aware means we are constantly on the look out. You would be shocked at how many products contain traces or manufactured in the same plant. Only good news!
Also be careful when packing snacks on public transportation. Opening a bag of nuts can be fatal
the kid has a food bracelet 🙂
I’m totally for protecting our vulnerable kids. As an FYI, here is something to consider, as a society, going forward. Recently there was an article (I think I saw it on COL even) about how kids in Israel have much lower incidence of peanut allergy compared to kids around the world. They attribute it to the fact that Israeli kids are exposed to Bamba early on in life. Early exposure it seems helps to desensitize the body to an allergen.
You can order a bracelet with allergy noted on it so that if anyone calls Hatzala when child is not with parent, they will see bracelet before mother reaches school
It sounds good but unfortunately it is Not true. I happen to use a pediatrician who is on the Board of Pediatric in Methodist, LICH, and happens to be a brilliant family physician for many many years. I happen to have 2 sons both fatally allergic to dairy and the other peanut butter. He will not even allow me to “test” and give my son a drop of dairy as it seems he is not as sensitive to smell as he used to be. Please back up your facts with a medical doctor before you can quote “quick cure” to… Read more »
I would stay away from any acupuncturist who should not be handling any truly dangerous and life threatening ch”v situations. Stick to REAL doctors!
Sharp and to the the point article.
My friend once advised me to put in my son who is fatally allergic to dairy; across the front of his shirt: Duct tape with the allergy written on it. I actually did it and that along with cooperation from staff of OM. There have been almost zero problems until someone put Techina on his arm.Did not even know about sesame seed allergies. Always always keep epipen and Liquid Zyrtec.
thank u for reminding all of us about this !
There is something called NAET treatment, where it actually does cure the child. It is done with having the child hold glass vials with different allergens in the vial, and using acupressure. The naturopath will never tell you, now go and eat peanut butter, or the like, but the NAET testing will bring the child/adult to a safe level, that if they do come in contact with the allergen , it won’t be fatal. This is not a fly by night thing, it is real and it works.
all schools should be peanut free, just from the smell , people think that if I have Bamba or a peanut chew no one will realize, when you are allergic, it smells from a mile away , blocks the throat etc. yes even wrappers on the floor, when you stand on them and then touch your shoes it can also affect you, eating peanuts and then touching the door knobs also affects a peanut allergy person, thank you for the article, wish people would take it serious, By the way it is not only children, adults as well.
All of us need to be aware in order to protect these vulnerable kids. My son, as a small child, had an allergy to raw egg whites — we had issues when the kids made parve ice cream in day camp… B”H he grew out of it, but not everyone does.
thank you!!!! very much needed article!
when peanuts present that much of a risk to a child, it is possible to make the entire school, a peanut-free school. It has been done. This was a school of over 800 students KA”H. Peanut butter was no longer offered at lunch, parents were informed at the beginning of each year, and teachers checked all items brought in for a party or Siyyum. In addition,I, the teacher, wore an Epi-pen on a string around my neck at all times during the year that particular child was in my class. B”H there were no emergencies, and the policy remained for… Read more »
Thank you thank you
The community needs to hear this
i remember hearing about a very close call in the summer, when at a wedding the chossons brother almost died because the caterer used nuts when he signed a contract that said no nuts
What is the difference between nut Sensitive and nut Free?
Thank you!
