Mrs. Fanny (Faiga) Kirschenbaum from NYC was mother, grandmother, great grandmother to many, and matriarch of the Kirschenbaum family, passed away this morning in her home at the age of 87 after suffering from an illness the past 6 years.
Born in Rostov, Russia and married at a very young age, she narrowly escaped Russia in the late 40’s after surviving the holocaust, with 2 of her children being born in German DP camps after the conclusion of the war. she later moved with her growing family to Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood, and eventually to Manhattan.
In the mid 1970’s, Fanny as she was affectionately known to many, together with her sons founded the famed Levana’s restaurant, a New York City landmark. Throughout her many years she greeted everyone person that walked through with a loving smile and her unique aristocratic grace, as well as feeding many people who came by that weren’t able to pay for a meal.
It was also her great Zchus over the years to bake her famous ‘Carrot’ cake, that was delivered to the home of the Rebbe and the Rebetzin. Along the years she was extremely active in many charitable causes, including in the Crown Heights community, and was known to all that knew her as a tremendous ‘Balles Chesed’.
She is survived by her children; Moshe – NYC, Avraham – Crown Heights, Sol & Sam of Teaneck NJ. As well as by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, many of whom serve as the Rebbe’s Shluchim today around the globe.
