Jewish restaurants and eateries are largely identified by their dietary standards. Glatt Kosher, Chalav Yisroel and many more labels are common displays at the store front.
In Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood last week a new angle was revealed: the Kosher diabetics.
On Sunday, February 8, the First Kosher Brooklyn Diabetics Club was inaugurated by Ahavas Chesed and SUNY Downstate Medical Center with 80 people in attendance.
“We felt that this syndrome of disordered metabolism is not being addressed properly and that people who suffer from it didn’t have a venue to deal with it on a community scale,” Rabbi Avraham Lider, Director of Ahavas Chesed, said.
A full course diabetic Kosher meal and a delicious dessert was waiting for the participants at Ahavas Chesed’s soup kitchen at 271 Kingston Ave. It was prepared by Orah and Simcha Catering owned by David and Orit Cohen.
CONTROL AND PREVENT
Dr. Agnes Gliwa, Assistant Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, began about how to control and prevent diabetes.
“A diabetic has to be alert of any infection in the foot,” alerted Dr. Michael Siegel, well known podiatrist in New York. He went on to explain the importance of taking care of the feet and visiting a podiatrist every 3 months.
Dr. Eli Rosen, a family doctor in Crown Heights, said that a proper diet and exercise for the diabetic and non-diabetic person can help prevent diabetes. “The veins in our body are like pipes that have to be kept clean for the blood flow,” he said.
Director of Endocrinology & Metabolism at Brookdale Hospital, Dr. Joel Goldman says that “our health is in our hands and it is up to us to improve,” to watch exactly what is eaten and eat more vegetables and fruits.
to me I learned a lot from this event and I hope Rabbi Lider will do every month.

do you have a club in Lakewood?
A SUGGESTION THAT WAS NOT BROUGHT UP AT THE 1ST MEETING, AND THAT IS TO HAVE A RETINAL EYE DOCTOR GIVE EXAMS, YEARLY, AS WELL AS A PODIATRIST ON HAND , AND ANY SUPPORT THAT IS MEDICALLY NEEDED.

Food intake and exercise will help control blood sugar tolerance. But the podiatrist’s advice of visiting him every 3 months sounds like he’s only trying to pay off his mortgage sooner.
