A stunning new butcher shop has opened on Albany Avenue near Union Street in Crown Heights this week, adding another “foodie” store to this up-and-coming corner of the neighborhood.
Located at 334 Albany Avenue near Benz’s Gourmet, Mr. Greens, and Albany Bakery, the new shop offers a new and improved shopping experience from the original CH Butcher Shop which remains on Troy Avenue.
“We have lots of experience from running our other successful shop, on what customers want and prefer, and we used all that information to create an incredible shopping experience in our new location,” Meir Kabakov, the shop’s owner, told COLlive.
“The key is, we provide gourmet, top on the line items, but our prices are reasonable,” he says. “And we are providing items that no one else in the neighborhood has,” he says.
The two shops are run with a “family feel,” with local Lubavitch Crown Heights residents doing the shechting, Koshering and more.
Staff take weekly trips to Pennsylvania to buy cows, and weekly shechting takes place in New Jersey by Shochtim Rabbi Chezy Posner and Rabbi Chaim Tzfasman. Rabbi Shmuly Tzfasman does the Nikur (deveining) and salting.
“Our customers will find a really nice environment, good vibes, and warm customer service,” store manager Mendel Luzhetski told COLlive. Along with state-of-the-art equipment and a gleaming interior, the shop boasts 2 self-checkout counters for those who are in a rush and don’t have time to wait for full service.
The new location offers a new and improved experience, with a selection of fine aged meats, chicken, lamb, and veal, says Luzhetski.
A specialty is their dry-aged meat, which uses a process to dry the meat in a controlled temperature and humidity range, removing the moisture from the meat and increasing the flavor, which enables better cooking.
“Crown Heights has become a real ‘foodie’ place, with so much going on in the neighborhood. There are a lot of simchas, family events, and get-togethers, and people should be able to enjoy good meats, barbeque, and sausages, that they can buy locally and not have to worry about the hassle of making it themselves,” Luzhetski says.
They also offer a full line of hot and cold take-out items, as well as pre-cooked food for lunch and dinner.
“Sometimes people just want a fast, delicious meal, ready-made and ready to go,” Luzhetski says.
Their take-out menu includes sandwiches, deli, hot meat and chicken dishes, lunch boxes and salad bowls.
A soft opening was held last week. Rabbi Yosef Braun, member of the Crown Heights Beis Din which certifies the shop, affixed the Mezuzah on the front door. The official grand opening will be held on Tu B’Av.
“Our shop is filling a need for the neighborhood, offering top quality meats with our very own Lubavitch Hashgacha,” Kabakov says.
