A large crowd of family members, friends and residents of Crown Heights participated bid farewell to one of the neighborhood’s most iconic individuals.
The funeral for R’ Berel Raskin, a fishmonger whose small shop became a world-renowned commercial enterprise, took place on Sunday.
Many remember his smiling profile seen in his storefront on Kingston Avenue and on his staple gefilte fish logs that were sold all around the world.
Participants first arrived at Shomrei Hadas Chaples in Boro Park, with a larger crowd standing outside 770 Eastern Parkway.
He was 85, having stood behind the counter and serving his customers for over 50 years and raising a large Chabad family.
He is survived by his wife Esther (nee Lipsker), and children Aaron Leib Raskin (Crown St.) – Crown Heights, Yossi Raskin – Crown Heights, Shloime Raskin – Crown Heights, Brocha Richler – Los Angeles, CA, Bassie Komar – Crown Heights, Chanie Greene – Rochester, MN, Doba Rimler – Crown Heights and Shaina Moss – Israel, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brothers R’ Michel Raskin, R’ Dovid Laine, and R’ Benzion Raskin, all of Crown Heights.

BDE. What a sad loss. When I was in yeshiva @ 770 5724-29 1964-69 he gave us an apartment upstairs I think for free.
He was always greeting everyone with a smile and a gut vort.
He loved people and loved life until the very end
… until Moshiach comes, may it be now!
BDE. He will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to his amazing wife and children and grandchildren as well as Great grandchildren. Only Simchas from now on.
He raised a beautiful family and he is surely having immense nachas from his wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A special man – he will be missed..
