Couple Can’t Afford a Single Chair

For Moshe Avraham Gewirtz, life has been one struggle after another. Being a special needs child always means that there are more challenges. However, after losing his mother as a child, he and his father were catapulted into a cycle of suffering.

His father, Chaim Dovid zt”l, had almost no belongings. However through these struggles, Moshe and his father were partners in this world. Last week, Chaim Dovid Gewirtz passed away due to leukemia.

During his stay in the hospital, something miraculous happened: Moshe became engaged. He had assumed that he would never get married. However when he met his kallah, a woman who struggles with mental disability herself, it was clear that it was meant to be.

Moshe and his father celebrated his vort by his hospital bed. Chaim Dovid Gewirtz zt”l was thrilled that his dream would be fulfilled: His son would have a chance at a new life, and a family of his own.

These are some of Moshe’s last memories of his father, before burying him last week.

Now Moshe Avraham is in a difficult and unique situation. He and his wife have depended on the help of family members to survive for all of their lives. Their conditions make it impossible to support themselves. However now the ony family that they had, is gone.

They desperately need savings, to start a home and put food on the table. Their wedding is next week. They reportedly cannot even afford a chair for their dining room table.

Those among us with special needs were destined to rely on friends and family for support. But what happens when they have no one to lean on? Will they be doomed to poverty for life?
