Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY), the foremost progressive supporter of Israel in the US Congress, visited CharBar, Washington, DC’s Kosher restaurant, on Thursday night to show support for the Jewish community, after the restaurant’s windows were smashed by vandals on Shabbos night (which coincided with the anniversary of Kristallnacht.)
The Congressman mingled with guests and Jewish leaders, made some remarks, then presented the restaurant’s owner, Mr. Michael Chelst, with a Congressional citation.
Charbar’s menu includes the best-selling “Shemtov Salad”, named after Rabbi Levi Shemtov, the shliach in Washington, DC.
The shliach in the Congressman’s District is also named Rabbi Levi Shemtov, the Congressman remarked, referring to the Shliach in Riverdale, NY.

His is an amazingly righteous man. I hope he runs for Senate one day, as he has more dignity and courage in his little finger than either of the NY Senators have in their whole body.
