New York City Comptroller John C. Liu visited F.R.E.E (Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe) of Brighton Beach on Thursday together with his public affairs liaison Mr. Ari Kagen in order to meet Russian-speaking rabbis from the five boroughs and their surrounding areas.
The Comptroller informed the rabbis that under his leadership the city increased their investment in Israeli bonds by millions of dollars and that he hopes to continue to invest much more in the coming year.
Mr. Liu is also working to eliminate deals with companies that have ties to Iran. The comptroller also expressed hope that the city will improve the distribution of the taxpayer’s money in a more suitable manner.
Rabbi Yossi Elishevitz gave over a D’var Torah on Parshas Noach, and Rabbi Moshiach Chudaitov thanked the comptroller on behalf of all the rabbis for taking the time to meet with the leaders of the Russian-speaking Jewish Community.
Rabbi Chudaitov spoke about the concerns of the Russian-speaking Jewish Community, particularly in the area of education, and encouraged the comptroller to continue doing his best to help the Russian-speaking Jewish Community.
The comptroller mentioned that he was impressed that so many young rabbis were working on improving their respective communities’ well being. In particular the comptroller mentioned Rabbi Yehudah Levin whom he recently met at the dinner of Chabad of Kensington.
The comptroller thanked Rabbi Hershel Okonov for hosting him and his staff for this meeting and thanked the attending rabbis. Mr. Liu hopes to meet again to continue to better relations between his office and the Russian-speaking Jewish communities.

Rabbi heshel okonov and his kids rabbi avremal and rabbi dovid has been the shliach in brighton beach since 1988 , and has done so much for the commuity of brighton , from a day care center which thank g-d has over 150 kids , to daliy classes , programs , and routes were yisheva boys go to store, thank you the okonov of brighton beach for always be there when anyone need anything you are a true shliach of the grand rabbi and you are making him proud keep up the good work , can’t wait till chanuka on… Read more »
