Subsidized chickens for the traditional kapparos custom will once again be available in Crown Heights by the NCFJE organization.
The discounted $5 price tag is made possible by diamond mogul Morris Gad for the seventh consecutive year. He is joined by local landlord and developer, Rabbi Dovid Fischer, as co-sponsor.
Chickens will be available Sunday, September 23, from 2:00 pm outside the NCFJE offices on Eastern Parkway, between Kingston and Albany. The discounted price is for residents only.
“The community really owes Morris Gad and Rabbi Fischer a tremendous debt of gratitude,” said Rabbi Shea Hecht, Chairman of NCFJE and a noted Crown Heights activist.
“Every year we get regards from dozens and dozens of families who literally can’t afford to spend an extra dollar. They simply would not be able to observe the minhag if not for their generosity,” he told COLlive.com.
When Rabbi JJ Hecht OBM, the late Chairman of NCFJE, facilitated large-scale observance of kapparos in the early 1970s, the Rebbe gave him much encouragement and asked for details of the operation, including the number of birds sold, the expenses, shechita and who took part.
The Crown Heights Beis Din’s CHK supervision, headed by Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba and Rabbi Shlomo Segal, announced it will be overseeing the Shechita of the NCFJE kapparos on Monday night at 10:00 pm.
The CHK is also providing supervision for the kapparos at Empire Shtiebel by Mendel Feldman.

I am a Crown Heightser who no longer lives in CH. I was planning to come to the kappores because it was the best time to bring my child, but now that it says it is only for residents I don’t really know what to do.
