Students of grade 4 at the United Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Crown Heights were privileged Tuesday to meet a 90-year-old Chossid.
Rabbi Zalman Kazen, a Shliach in Cleveland who recently moved to Crown Heights, greeted the children at a dining room table.
The son of Mrs. Sarah Katzenelenbogen OBM, known as Mumme Sarah, Kazen recalled how she helped many Jews with documents to leave Soviet Russia on their way to freedom.
Among them was Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson OBM, the Rebbe’s mother.
Rabbi Kazen showed pictures of Mumme Sarah and the rest of his large family.
The boys, flanked by their teacher Rabbi Yossi Zweibel, listened to how difficult life was for the Chassidim in those times and how they learned in “underground Chadorim.”
When he was 9 years old, in 1927 (5688), Kazen attended the Previous Rebbe’s last Simchas Torah in Russia.
His father R’ Michoel Katzenelenbogen held him up high in the packed Shul and made sure the boy listened to the Haftora from the Rebbe.
Later, Kazen was taken in for a private Yechidus audience with the Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson OBM.
“It was truly a great experience,” Rabbi Zweibel told COLlive. “We wish Rabbi Kazen many more happy and healthy years and we thank his daughter Mrs. Wineberg for arranging the visit.”
Beautiful pictures. We miss Rabbi Kazen in Cleveland. Such beautiful children. A mystery that someone can look at these pics and worry about the color of a child’s yarmulke.
Beautiful, A good untuf to the entire Kazen mishapacha!
i realy enjoyed it realy much.

It’s something the children will remember. I don’t know if there is anyone today, who can talk about the Friediker Rebbe in Leningrad.
Those children are really lucky!
It’s so important for the youth to hear from ‘eltere chassidim’.
learned their lesson yet?
learn the Rebbe’s Sichos especially from 5748-5752!
still put yechi yarmukas on their kids heads? they havent learned their lesson yet?
I envy Mumme Sarah, R’ Mendel Futerfas, and all those who risked their lives countless times for other people.
