A series of antisemitic attacks against Jewish institutions and people over the weekend has caused a “stir” in the Jewish community of Chicago, Illinois.
On Shabbos morning, Tol Kuv Kosher Foods at 2938 West Devon and the Tel Aviv Bakery at 2944 West Devon had its windows broken.
Then, a yellow swastika was painted on the wall of F.R.E.E. of Chicago – The Bellows Center, a Chabad center which distributes thousands of food packages each month to those in need. Another vandalism was found at the Hanna Sacks Bais Yaakov High School.
On Sunday evening, a young Jewish man on attacked across the street from F.R.E.E. which is located in the West Ridge neighborhood. Chicago Hatzalah rushed to treat the victim.
The victim, who was on his way to daven Mincha, recounted the attack to Chicago police. “Thank G-d, he only sustained minor injuries,” said Chabad Rabbi Levi Notik, who directs FREE.
By Sunday night, police already has a suspect in custody and are investigating whether this individual is responsible for the attacks.
“I want to thank law enforcement, they did a tremendous job,” Rabbi Notik told the media. “They were here very quick, had detectives here in minutes. Police already have one person in custody. It was incredible.”
He told COLlive.com that his message to the Jewish community was that “we need to increase in more good deeds and acts of kindness to overcome this this dark hatred.”
