Storing personal items under the seat on Frontier Airlines remains free – for now.
The airline, which accounts for about 1 percent of the overall traffic flown by U.S. airlines, is lowering the prices of its ticket fares as it plans to rake it in with fees.
AP is reporting that Frontier will be charging for storing items in the overhead bin ($20 to $50), in addition to the $15 to $25 fliers pay for their first checked bag.
Passengers will also pay for seat assignments — $3 to $8 for any seat and $5 to $50 for preferred seating. Frontier already charges $1.99 for a soda or water on its flights, AP adds.
The Denver-based airline, recently sold to private equity firm Indigo Partners LLC, is trying to transform itself into a fee-dependent airline, similar to Spirit Airlines, also owned by Indigo.
Frontier says that in exchange for these new fees, it is lowering its base fare by an average of 12 percent. The new charges apply to tickets purchased on or after Monday, AP reported.
