The famous tourist island of Mont Saint-Michel, situated near the shores of beautiful Normandy, France, hosted the lights of Chanukah for the first time in its history.
Rabbi Motti Levin, the Chabad Shliach in the nearby city of Caen, Normandy, organized the historic lighting on the island which is a popular tourist attraction for millions of people each year, including many Jews and Israelis visiting France.
On the third night of Chanukah, after brief words on the meaning of the holiday, Rabb Levin lit the candles and the excited audience enjoyed donuts and latkes, with Chanukah tunes playing in the background.
In 1874 the island was declared a historical preservation site. It is one of the few areas untouched by the fighting in the 1944 invasion of France.
In 1979, UNESCO recognized the entire island a World Heritage site, and the site is now the third most visited attraction in France after the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles in Paris.
