A newly appointed liaison between Israel’s Foreign Ministry and the Breslov chassidic community is none other than Chabad activist Rabbi Levi Edrey.
One of Edrey’s first tasks will be to coordinate the pilgrimage of Breslov followers to the Ukrainian town of Uman, where Rabbi Nachman of Breslov is buried.
The Kfar Chabad resident will be in touch with Israeli and Ukrainian government officials after the past mass visits on Rosh Hashana caused friction between Jewish worshipers and local residents.
Edrey is the former aid to Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Aharonov, Chairman of Lubavitch Youth Organization (Tzach) in Israel and has supervised its operations in Ukraine and Russia in past years.
He is also a close friend of Israel’s Foriegn Minister Avigdor Lieberman, but sources said the ministry wanted a communal operator who is not a Breslover for the position.
In the next few days, Edrey will be holding meetings with various officials – including Israel’s new ambassador to Ukraine Reuven Dinel – to discuss the security and other matters.
