Close to a thousand people packed into the new, state-of-the-art Beis Chabad of Morumbi in S. Paulo, Brazil to witness its inauguration. The event was the culmination of years of work and the magnificent new center promises to usher in an exciting new stage for Jewish life in the area.
The crowd included Jews from various shuls and organizations of S. Paulo’s diverse Jewish community and a strong feeling of achdus could be felt in the air.
Rabbi Dovid Weitman, who founded the center over 30 years ago, read a letter that the Rebbe had sent to him in 1989 at the opening of Chabad Morumbi.
Rabbi Shabsi Alpern, the Shliach responsible for building Chabad Houses throughout Brazil, stressed the importance and significance of establishing Chabad Houses to revitalize the Jewish community.
Special Tehillim and tefillos were recited by Rabbi Hershel Leib Begun, a veteran Shliach in Brazil, and Rabbi Laniado from the Sefardic Beit Yakov synagogue.
The event concluded with a stirring rendition of Shehechiyanu sung by Chazan Zalman Tzfasman.
Reflecting on the event afterward, Rabbi Dovid Goldberg, who directs Chabad of Morumbi together with his wife Chani, said: “The event left people feeling uplifted and inspired in a way I haven’t seen before. The warmth, togetherness, and sense of connection and purpose were palpable. We are determined to use this new center to enhance Jewish life in Morumbi in unprecedented ways and bring much nachas to the Rebbe from it.”
