The city of Tver, north of Moscow, has a long history of anti Semitic cruelty that continues until today with gravestones in a Jewish cemetery being desecrated and a bomb on a Jewish building.
Yet its synagogue has survived it all.
A special visit took place Sunday commemorating 100 years of Tver’s historical Synagogue that survived both the Wars and Communism.
The delegation of dignitaries included the Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar, the head of the Joint and representatives of the Israeli Embassy in Russia.
Located in the former the capital of a powerful medieval state, the Jewish community in Tver in enjoying a revival of sorts after joining the Federation of Jewish Communities in Russia this past year.
Rabbi Lazar, who leads the Federation, flew in from Moscow and spoke about the importance of the synagogue in the daily life of a Jewish person.
During his visit, Rabbi Lazar inspected the Mikvah and toured the Jewish museum, the library and Sunday school.
He called on the local Rabbi Y. Rozenzveig and the leaders of the community to increase their increase and centralize their Torah, educational and social activities in the shul.
