Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), announced the updated guidance for what people who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 can safely do indoors and outdoors.
Fully vaccinated people don’t need to wear a face mask while alone or with household members outdoors, at a small outdoor gathering or while dining outdoors. They do recommend a mask while attending a crowded outdoor event.
People who aren’t vaccinated also don’t need a mask while outdoors alone or with members of their household, or in a small gathering outdoors with fully vaccinated people.
If the small outdoor gathering includes people unvaccinated, they should all be wearing a mask, as well as in a crowded outdoor event and while dining with friends from multiple households.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday that New York state has adopted the CDC’s updated mask guidance for fully vaccinated and non-vaccinated people, indicating the change would take effect immediately, NBC New York reported.
Dr. Jay Varma, New York City’s senior public health adviser, said he wants to review the new recommendations in more detail before rolling out any sweeping changes to citywide COVID protocol, according to NBC.
“The federal government is saying you don’t have to,” Mayor Bill de Blasio commented about wearing a mask. “I think a lot of people will still choose to. I expect a lot of the time I will for sure but it will depend on the circumstance.”
“What we do want to focus on intensely is keep people in the habit of wearing masks indoors for at least the next couple of months. We’ve talked about June as an important turning point. Then we’ll reassess from there,” he added.
