Residents of the Center and South Crown Heights living in Brooklyn Community Board District 9 can now apply to become a “Resident Member” on any of the Brooklyn Community Board 9 (Brooklyn CB9) Committees.
Now any local resident, men and women alike, of the Shchunah can apply as a “Resident Member” part-time volunteer position on any of the different Committees, and be able to vote on important safety matters affecting Kan Tziva Hashem Es Habrocha.
There are many important issues affecting Crown Heights that “Resident Members” of Brooklyn Community Board District 9 can vote on and voice their concern.
Including the new proposed MTA City Bus Routes on Albany Avenue and on Empire Blvd as reported on COLlive, as well as the CitiBikes on Eastern Parkway which can comfortably be moved onto the Island instead of the street.
But the most pressing issue at hand for all residents of the district, is the Mega Homeless Shelter (Kingsboro Psychiatric Shelter) at 681 Clarkson Ave (corner Albany Ave) in south Crown Heights / East Flatbush. Which will add 700 more homeless from other boroughs and other parts of the city to this shelter.
This is in addition to 5 other large homeless shelters with a combination of about 1500 beds, that NYC and NYS are in the process of approving from Utica Ave till New York Ave in south Crown Heights in CB9 district.
A local resident who lives on Midwood Street stated to COLlive, “We already have multiple homeless shelters in this direct area. With dozens of emotionally disturbed violent individuals from those existing homeless shelters taking over the neighborhood and committing all sorts of crimes, day and night.”
Brooklyn Community Board 9 stated on social media (Facebook), “We encourage local residents to apply to be a Committee Resident Member for the upcoming Community Board 9 session. The deadline to fill out the application is this Monday, August 28, 2023, at 5 PM.”
By becoming a “Resident Member” you are invited to attend once a month (for about 2 hours in the evening) a meeting with your fellow Crown Heights / Brooklyn CB9 Committee members. Vote and voice your opinion on different matters and concerns affecting your committee and community.
Each Committee can have an effect on different aspects of the Shchunah.
The different committees are:
Economic Development.
Education & Library.
Environmental Protection.
Health & Social Services
Housing.
Parks, Recreation & Culture.
Public Safety.
Transportation.
ULURP/Land Use.
Youth Services.
For those that live in East Flatbush / Remsen Village. You can apply for “Resident Member” by Brooklyn Community Board 17.
