A Crown Heights resident who borrowed a Citi Bike from New York’s ride-sharing program on Monday was left without transportation when a brazen thief rode off on his borrowed bike.
The victim said he stepped into a grocery store for a minute to grab something, and that’s when the thief can be seen on video riding away with the bike.
The thief was caught on surveillance footage calmly approaching the bike and riding away.
“I want the community to be aware of how vigilant one must be,” the victim’s friend told COLlive. “Even a $5 dollar chain would have probably prevented the theft by providing a deterrent,” he said.
The victim has filed a police report but still does not know if he will be responsible to pay for the bike.
“Sometimes the bikes are returned to the Citi Bike racks, so we won’t know for some time,” the friend said. “Hopefully he won’t be liable, since the bikes are valued at $1200,” he said.

Or a stroller.
I always wonder when you see these low life riding city bikes how can they aford the bikes they all steal them somehow
It’s not his bike to decide whether is ok to leave it out of the store! He has full responsibility for it… And in case he’s not aware, this is Brooklyn.
Aren’t the bikes insured by the city?
Aren’t the bikes insured by the city?
now I know exactly why we should have NEVER had this whole citi bike thing come to crown heights in the first place.
That’s part of the terms and conditions. Never leave a bike or a Citibike unlocked.
Don’t blame the victim, find this thief.
City knows that so many bikes are stolen, it must be insured and lock must be provided.
