As preparations for the second annual Bike 4 Friendship coast-to-coast bike ride swing into high gear at Friendship Circle headquarters, a new teen program was recently rolled out to provide more people with a chance to join the bike ride.
On August 20, 2012, a group of teens will kick off from NYC on a 220 mile bike trek to Washington, DC.
While the cross country team is currently in the midst of a rigorous training program, this shorter distance trip, by contrast, will take a slower pace and will not require heavy training prior to the trip.
In addition, the extra support that will accompany teens participating in this program means that riders will carry less equipment and enjoy a fun and enjoyable trip.
Last year, Bike 4 Friendship succeeded in raising awareness for acceptance of special needs individuals when they tackled the odds of a daunting journey and sent a clear message to spectators along the way, that external differences don’t render an individual less deserving of respect, compassion and friendship.
This year, this new teen program promises to bring the extraordinary Bike 4 Friendship experience to a wider base of potential bike riders. At the end of the trip, which will conclude on August 25, 2012 the group will spend quality time together during an immersive Shabbaton in DC.
Rabbi Mendel Groner, director of the Bike 4 Friendship team said, “We’re augmenting our bike ride with a teen program so that everyone gets the opportunity to join this meaningful and fun experience. It’s not just for elite cyclists; now that we’re offering a lighter and easier ride, younger riders can be a part of the Bike 4 Friendship team.”
Zalmi Perlman, last year’s cyclist, discusses his trip:
