I have only heard of the Gas mask issue when it comes to facial hair. A study of our history would no doubt show that facial hair was commonplace throughout the history of the United States Army. To make the claim that the US Army now looks like the Taliban is a bit of a stretch. I am more concerned with the soldiers ability to acquit themselves in the field of combat (i.e. fighting, stress under fire, following orders etc.) than I am with whether or not they look pretty clean shaven. While this is great news, it’s still not the end-all be-all that some think it is. There are still huge issues of Shabbos in the military, and this doesn’t address those at all.

This is great news, although I dearly wish it wasn’t two decades too late for myself and my husband. As a young couple, we were set for him to join the US Defense Corps as a Navy Chaplain, after we had successfully run Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at a Navy submarine base in the South. His beard was an “obstacle” that even then-President George Bush would not waive. I hope today’s young couples will grab this very special opportunity to connect with Yidden who have no other connection to Yiddishkeit whatsoever.
