They say that school helps prepare us for life. The tests, programs, systems; they’re all here for our benefit. Along those lines, the Ninth Grade of Bais Rivkah High School has had the privilege of participating in a unique program. This program is not only for learning and enjoyment, but something that has brought out, in the most powerful way, the power of giving.
Going to visit the elderly in a seniors’ home can be a beautiful experience, but quite daunting if you’ve never done it before.
Boarding the bus straight after school, the girls had mixed feelings- excitement, nervousness, and fear of the unknown.
Prepped with delicious hot pretzels and a short overview of the plan, they left school, ready to undertake this exciting mission.
After a 45 minute bus ride, they finally arrived in Seagate, where they were ushered into a large room with elderly people sitting around the table. Whether it was painting canvases, decorating flowerpots and planting flowers, or making creations out of clay, the girls sat and bonded with the residents. Family background, personal stories, and common hobbies were just some of the things the girls discussed, creating bonds and putting smiles on the women’s faces.
The joy on the faces of the elderly from receiving all this attention, was parallel to the joy on the girls faces from having this opportunity to give and connect. The girls left on a high, having felt the satisfaction and joy of giving.
Due to popular demand, both by the seniors and the 9th grade, this program will continue, uplifting all the participants, a win-win situation for all! We hope that the cycle of kindness will continue, spreading light and joy all around.
