Bais Rivka schools, the flagship Chabad girls school in Crown Heights, remains closed for at least another day.
The school has not opened at the start of the fall 5777 school year due to financial woes and a reshuffling of the board of directors.
While an “emergency meeting” between teachers and the new board of directors took place on Monday night, parents are still being kept in the dark as to the fate of the school – whether it will be opening in the next few days, if at all.
After hearing from members of the new board, the meeting concluded with the principals’ announcement they would be holding a meeting amongst themselves as to whether school will be opening this week.
Many parents are not optimistic about the school opening soon, and one has taken the initiative of creating a google doc for parents to include upcoming activities being planned as an alternative to school.
“Let’s use the power of the internet for good,” the parent wrote. “I’m trying to compile all the programs people are putting together in one place as stop gap measures for Bais Rivka.
“I’ve just created a google doc anyone can fill in and add whatever info they know. Please share widely so folks can fill in and our daughters are not left at home.”

Maybe take all that $ to build maintain the eruv and all of its investigations and mess and put it towards your children’s schools…this is a financial issue..yes were all shocked…but there’s enough $ in Ch to get this taken care of…if everyone cared more about education then their wardrobes and vacations…and their ‘we need the eruv battles’
Aliyah now where Jewish education is no problem!
Gam Zoo L’tova! True, BR is completely mismanaged and there is little financial transparency. True, our daughters are being taught (by way of example) that Jewish education is of very little importance. True, our grandparents who sacrificed their lives in Samarkand for Jewish education are now rolling in their graves….. Nevertheless, there’s a silver lining here. Thank God your readership increases as you bring these stories to light. May you continue to grow your readership and may you continue to apply pressure to the powers that be by bringing these atrocities to light. L’chaim and Shana Tova.

I never heard of a School not opening on time, these girls need to be in school its the law, someone needs to step up and call the board of Education, when there was an eruv was put up in CH, they made such a Chilul Hashem about that, I don’t want to hear that their kids go to Bais Chaya Mushka or another school, that is not the point
what is going on?????????????????
the parents deserve an update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and so do the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to 33.
I am an eruv tumler and have my daughters in one of those schools and your words are wicked.
There are upwards of 1000 chabad girls in that school you so blithely dismiss and there are numerous reasons aside from not caring about the future of your children (do Teshuva now) for not having been able to get into one of those schools.
300 CH families, over 1000 girls with no school and you dare dismiss them, and you have a Rebbe?
and get down to business. Lets see where all the money went.
pretty low comment to try and suggest that the parents who send their children to other schools care about their children’s better education, as if to say the parents who send their kids to br don’t!?@!
real low comment, i wish you well and hope you rethink, for your own sake
To those who ask “Where are the Eruv Tumlers?”
Here is your answer:
Their daughters are enrolled in Bais Chaya Mushka or Bnos Menachem.
They care about the future of their children and have made the choice of better education.
what a chutzpah!!!!!!!. Teachers work hard. They have to pay babysitters. Do you work for free? Would you say that you are making money off someones back when you get paid for your work? Try telling the grocery or butcher or eyeglasses store or the clothing store “stop charging me as you are getting rich off my children’s back”
I live out of CH, my granddaughter goes to bais rivka, its very sad that they close a school with 1000 girls and let them be home and walk around in street and do nothing, doesn’t say good thing about lubatvich and our chinuch.
those responsible for this situation need to resign now.
thank you to all trying to smooth this out-no matter what, parents MUST be given daily updates of a general idea of whats going on with opening date….you cant just say…until further notice….
to #10
you have a teacher, now what, who’s going to make sure they teach properly, not so simple….
to #15
in all honestly, it’s immature to blame a whole community, this has to do with a specific situation, there is no other school in CH that does this
How do you find out about the optional high school classes???
The Eruv is built, the whole community is up in arms. Someone says the word tznuis, the whole community is up in arms. The police remove the barriers on EP, the whole community is up in arms. 2000 girls are out of school with no word on it opening, the community is silent!! Why? Why are we ignoring this issue?? Is it because its girls education (“less” important!?)? Is it because too many people ppl are related to too many involved ppl? Why the silence!! Until the doors are opened, teacher paid, girls taught, etc, we are all to blame… Read more »
The issues arethis: 1) that the school doesnt have the money to pay the teachers, if a teacher doesnt get paid they cant teach its that simple. 2) Some parents simpley dont have the financial means to pay, rent has gone up like crazy in CH and they cant pay full tuition for all their kids. 3) the school has still had rachmanus and accepted those children. 4) hopefully with a new board they will make a system where they will run the parents income through a 3rd party company and see how much each family is really capable of… Read more »
Fire almost all the admin (save a ton of money). rent out BR classrooms to 20 students per class, pay their own teacher out of their fees. Every class is required to include at least 2 (or 3?) students who cannot pay. Class fees cover teacher; rent for room, and photocopies and contribute to electric and overhead. 2 parents collect the fees to pay the teacher each month. a parent body (surely there are 4 or 5 bold and capable parents out of so many?) takes over admin tasks like paying bills, and then fundraising only needs to be for… Read more »
Can the girls enroll in the ONLINE SCHOOL; until things are figured out?
We need to make public fasts and we need to abstain from meat during the week and we need to hear from Rabbonim.
Get your facts straight, the principles are also not getting paid, they are doing this because the teachers complain to them when they don’t have the money to pay their bills and buy their basic need, the principals deserve lots of credit for standing strong, would you work for six months without pay?
What would happen if beis rivka closed the doors and dont reopen?
Great to hear, but unaware of details. Could you please share info for the benefit of everyone. Would be big help to many.
shame shame shame
The business approach is to merge BR with OT (and ULY). This saves duplicate salaries for administrators and combines resources. These schools all serve the same community. They must merge into one united entity. That’s what is done in the business world!!!
Principals do the right thing and step down if you can’t face them how did you do it till now while you are paid and teachers are not its time for you to go get young people to run the school and regain the respect the school deserve and teacher if you are teaching for a career or in it to making a buck off our childs back please stop teaching and tell your husband to get a job
Though it’s a difficult time, yasher koach to you for taking the initiative in coordinating this informative tool.
How can br have the chutzpah to not inform parents on a day to day via email of the goings on. Our children are enrolled in the school!!!!, tuition and all and they leave us in the dark. The only source of info we get is from col?!?. Thank you col for informing us bec. Our school is not. No parent meeting about this? Unless you are part of some elite circle or whatsssp group do you find out the latest…what about the rest of us parent? How unproffesional of you br? I come from a different background and this… Read more »
What makes?
Bais Rivka schools, the flagship Chabad girls school in Crown Heights,
Where are the eruv tumlers? It’s ok to make a cause output an eruv but a 1000 girls not in school and not a word?!?!?!?
Parents need to all demonstrate in a public demonstrstion. Get medias attention. Why are we sitting back like little cattle waiting for school to open. Our children are not learning!!! It is a law that a child needs to be in school. Our private school is registered as a legal school in nyc is not opening to educate our girls. And we just sit back and wait. Are you going to wait 10 months?!?!
Anyone want to come with me to the public school.in our area to enroll our girls? What would happen if we all showed up to try to enroll our girls all 3,000 of them. . Can someone please call the board of ed!!!
I was at a meeting this week out of ch. Someone asked me is your daughter in that school that didn’t open…what an embarrassment for lubavitcher. What kind of message are they sending to our children.
You think the eiruv is the problem…tznius this is a himel geshrei.. the man running br doesn’t give a dam…
If the school doesn’t open this week I’m stopped my checks and going open our own classes..
If every parent pays 4000 20 girls is 80k more then enough to pay a teacher and rent/utilities
This is the administration Stragedy. Iow is part of the business
BR is always going to be closed the first days of lithe cycle because this is the way they have not pay the teachers more thank half of their salaries iOw this situation generates a lot of income for them ( in 1 hand they help them not to pay what they owe plus pave the way to do the same the current year , plus generate some more contributions) it’s going to happen every year because is their main fundraise campaign
Please post a story about the many shuls, individuals and shuls that have holding temporary classes for the benefit of the girls.
As if the school didn’t have a bad name until this year, it for sure has definitley a bad name now! What a chutzpah for a school, that has so many jewish children, not to open up on time.parents should be demonstrating,in front of the school. Enough is enough!
Hold tight… We’re going to see Bais rivka restored to all its glory! Thanks for all your hard work!
I am not from CH, but still watch this event with amazement.
Ad Mosei???
The one or ones who are responsible for BR not starting should know that every day the school is closed more 1000 girls are out roaming the streets because of them.
About the “eruv” the “rabbonim” are screaming and shouting, but when it come to 1000 girls not being in school….silence.
Why isn’t the Board of Education stepping in? BR receives funding for books etc. And every day they are closed means another day tacked on somewhere else to make up the required, legal # of days a school is open. It’s time for parents to wake up & smell the compost heap. BR is a disaster & who knows how long it will continue. Approach teachers directly, pay them directly, and set up schools in your homes. Grandparents, you may have space in your homes. It’s a community problem so the community has to think outside the box to solve… Read more »
