Five years ago, Avos U’banim of Coral Springs began unceremoniously in a small classroom with about seven people. Since then, attendance and enthusiasm for the program have steadily grown with about 55 fathers and sons attending each week.
This past Sunday, Chabad of Coral Springs hosted the Avos U’banim Finale, with learning, video/slideshow, pizza, and fire juggler performance.
The community at large steadily supported the Avos U’banim program’s growth. The founding principle of the learning program is to incentivize one-on-one father and son learning. These limited Motzei Shabbos sessions, punctuated by the 12 pesukim and chassidshe ma’se hopefully will have an impact through the remainder of the year. Running the Avos U’banim program isn’t a job – it’s too much fun.
Yidden have survived ages because learning Torah comes first. Where others built empires, the yidden built shuls and cheders. “The world only exists because of the hevel p’hem, breath of the children, engaged in Torah study” (Shabbat 119b). What is most striking about this statement is not the claim itself – that is well within yiddishkiet (see, for example Rashi Breisheet 1:31) – but that all it takes for the world to keep going is the hevel p’hem, the breath of the children. The word hevel means nothingness, or in this context, “hot air”. It matters little that the Torah study of the children may be at a low level. If children are given a solid Jewish education, there is no need to worry about our future. From amongst the children will emerge the next generation of leaders of the Jewish people.
Photos were taken by Dovid Levi. A big thank you for all the wonderful pictures.
There is a Mother and Daughter program for girls in Coral Springs.
What I like about the community where I live is this nice program is for fathers, sons and daughters. Let’s show our girls that they count!
