The 2013 West Indian American Day Carnival is set to parade down Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. “Thousands of masqueraders and dancing spectators,” organizers said.
But the NYPD doesn’t want any Israelis to be among them.
Since Labor Day weekend, which brings millions of people to Crown Heights for the annual parade, falls out very close to Rosh Hashana this year, even more measures will be taken to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.
Thousands of Israeli bochurim and girls also arrive annually, to spend the month of Tishrei in New York. “Residents are used to all of the crowds and noise of the parade, but the visitors are not, and we don’t want any issues to come up because of it,” 71st Precinct Chief, Deputy Inspector John Lewis told COLlive.com.
Beginning on Shabbos, the local precinct has received extra help from nearby precincts to add to the patrols in the area. Police will be patrolling the area on foot and on scooters with lights, from Franklin Ave. to Rochester Ave.
The NPYD will also be closely following noise complaints, with extra patrols to deal with calls that come in. “If you have a noise issue near you, call 311,” we were told.
On Friday, the police met with members of the Crown Heights community COP-Shmira Patrol to discuss the extra security measures that will be taken over the next few weeks during the Jewish holiday season.
Street closures beginning Sunday evening:
Anyone wishing to drive into Crown Heights streets, from Montgomery St. until President St., will need ID showing local address.
On Sunday evening beginning at 7:00 pm until Monday morning 10:00 am Empire Blvd will be closed from New York Avenue to Flatbush Avenue. Monday morning from 10:00 am Empire Blvd. will open for through traffic, no turns.
Crown Heights streets will be closed Monday from Empire Blvd to Eastern Parkway, from Grand Army Plaza to Rochester Ave. 8:00 am until 6 pm.
Here are the NYPD’s tips for visitors to the neighborhood:
1. Don’t leave any luggage unattended. Gabboim will have a place set up to put your suitcases. We don’t want to have an unattended bag turn into a whole cordoned off area.
2. Be careful with use of cellphones and valuables. Do not carry bags or purses behind you, but rather in front. Do not walk around with your passport, find a safe place for it.
3. People have their belongings stolen all the time from basements and places where they are staying. Do not leave valuables unattended.
4. Gates will be stationed all along Eastern Parkway, do not cross in the middle of the street, use crosswalks.
5. If you are unfamiliar with certain areas of the neighborhood or around Crown Heights, do not walk there alone.
6. Most importantly: If you see something, say something.

Stop this crazy “parade”. Move it to Atlantic ave or to Manhattan where all other parades go. Why should our area be inundated with all sorts of @%&+ and we get stranded on a day off from work?
What time does Eastern pkwy open for traffic and parking?
Thanks for pointing out the obvious but their point was that the annual killing spree related to the parade already started. Brownsville is not far from ch and this weekend is usually filled with violence all directly related to the parade. Last night alone there were several killings. Point is be safe! Most importantly be alert and aware of your surroundings.

a 1 year old was shot & killed in his stroller tonight by some punk. Be careful, it could get nasty here, it wouldn’t be the first time people have been murdered at the parade. It really is time it was banned.

The Labor Day Parade used to be much worse and the parade used to march down Kingston Avenue after they finished with Eastern Parkway and then went onto all the side streets. But some years ago Erev Rosh Hashana fell out on Labor Day and the The 71st precinct worked with the community and cordoned off 770 and the rest of the block from the spectators. DON’T GO EAST!! What you want to do is take Brooklyn, Albany, Nostrand or Schenechtady immediately to Linden, then make a left onto Linden and you should have no traffic from tat point on. DO NOT try to take the streets near Eastern Pkwy INCLUDING Montgomery which is full of pedestrian and auto traffic.

I was thinking that the guests are in for a surprise. This is the first time that tishrei is so early in September and the guest won’t know what hit them. I can also imagine lots of ppl plan to come to ch between Sunday night and Monday when it will be impossible. I wish them good luck!!
you should have no problem getting out of crown heights tomorrow just go with Montgomery st. till the end and make a left until Rockaway pkwy, there make a right until Linden Blvd. just after Brookdale Hospital, make a left onto Linden till the end and then take the belt to the airport. have a Safe trip.

I wonder how many orchim will be stranded at airports because they can’t get in. It’s a nightmare for us, too. The parade is bad enough but these street closures make it impossible to get in or out.
