In the far reaches of upper Queensland, closer to New Guiana than Melbourne, is Australia’s most remote Chabad Center in Cairns.
Rabbi Dovid Eliezrie was hosted there this week, revealing to the small growing community the story behind his bestselling book “The Secret of Chabad.”
“It’s truly uplifting to see how Yiddishkeit is bubbling up even in small communities like Cairn,” Rabbi Eliezrie told COLlive.com. “It was a pleasure to meet the truly dedicated Shluchim Rabbi Ari and Mushkie Rubin, and the wonderful community they have created.”
Rabbi Eliezrie says that “What is most enjoyable was the intriguing and insightful questions that followed the presentation.” He reported that more books were sold per capita in Cairns than anywhere.
“The Secret of Chabad” was a finalist in the National Jewish Book Awards, the first Chabad book to receive that distinguished honor.
The Chabad outpost in Cairns was established by Chabad of Rara-regional and rural Australia founded by Saul and Beverly Spigler in Melbourne. It sponsors programs in smaller Jewish communities throughout Australia and is planning the opening more centers.
Chabad of RARA was featured last year on Australian TV in the film “Outback Rabbis.” The SBS documentary is being shown at film festivals around the world.
