The Rebbe has encouraged Chabad rabbis to serve in the capacity of Chief Rabbis in Israel as a way to help them bring the warm and welcoming approach of chassidus to all residents.
To date, over close to 2 dozen such posts are indeed held by Lubavitch rabbonim in large and small cities, regional councils and villages.
This Sunday, the city of Kiryat Malachi in Israel’s Southern District, with a population of 20,600, has joined that list.
The city council, led by Mayor Motti Malka, has voted in Rabbi Yitzchok Yehuda Yeruslavsky for the life-long position of Chief Rabbi, in addition to his role as Av Beis Din of the city.
Rabbi Yeruslavsky has been the spiritual leader of the Nachalas Har Chabad neighborhood in the city since 5729 and is widely recpected as the head of the Chabad Beis Din in Israel.
