At the end of every school-year, hundreds of young girls tearfully say goodbye to their friends with whom they have built a relationship like no other.
With warm hugs, memories reminisced and a heavy heart, these Friendship Circle volunteers close a chapter of their lives that was the highlight of their high-school years.
After many life-changing hours spent with children who have special needs, these volunteers know all too well their ability to have a tremendous positive impact on someone else’s life. And they were changed too.
Now, having grown beyond the age to be a Friendship Circle volunteer, they ready themselves to move on, bidding adieu to a friend they would love to keep learning from and giving to. But alas, all good things come to an end.
Or do they?
This week, Friendship Circle of Brooklyn announced the initiation of the first ever Friendship Circle Alumni and Friends, an entirely new program for an entirely new age. Inspired by its own growth from ten to a hundred families since its inception, the organization recognized the need to expand, include the wider community and offer more services to Friendship Circle families.
The new initiative is big news not just for alumni who miss volunteering, but their friends who regret they never had the chance to get involved. In that way, FC Alumni and Friends is both a joyous reunion and new beginning for many a post-high school girl. But that’s not all that’s changing.
Friendship Circle is calling upon Alumni and Friends not simply for the one hour of time that is specific to high-school age; instead, Alumni and Friends are being asked to give their hearts to Friendship Circle in a way that is entirely unique to them. Whether it be a talent in cooking, photography, writing, performing, beauty – the list goes on – Friendship Circle believes everyone has something to give. All members need is the desire to offer their time and talents to a monumental cause.
In addition to involving new and necessary talents, Alumni and Friends are being given the opportunity to be involved with the kids on a whole new level, including taking them on trips, tutoring, making hospital visits and the like.
“This is really the future of Friendship Circle,” said Director Chayle Eckhaus, “Parents are exciting at the new opportunity for even more support and so many girls are ecstatic to get involved again. It’s very exciting and incredibly inspiring.”
So, the circle just got bigger. Are you in?
