Albany Police Mounted Unit, vehicles and motorcycles escorted the Lag BaOmer “Human Dignity” Parade of the Maimonides Hebrew Day School through central Albany on Thursday.
Students paraded through the streets with signs, flags, drums, and string instruments. Each class learned about and designed banners that described a teaching or life experience from Rabbi Akiva.
Their route passed by the Bnai Brith Parkview Apartments where students sang and played music, recited pesukim, and were greeted by the residents.
Throughout the past year, Maimonides students have visited and participated in an inter-generational partnership with seniors at Jewish senior homes through a program called “Better Together.”
Shliach Rabbi Yisroel Rubin proudly announced that the Maimonides school had just won a “Better Together” essay competition from 25 schools across the country.
The message of love, friendship, and brotherhood was heard down the streets of Albany and in the centrally located, Washington Park.
In honor of the day, Rabbi Rubin authored a new booklet “Chaviv Adam” (download here) which analyzes several teachings from Rabbi Akiva on the subject of “Human Dignity.”
