Agudas Chassidei Chabad International (“Aguch”), the umbrella organization of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, issued a global call for observance of this Shabbos, the 20th of Av.
They quoted a letter from the Rebbe in which he calls on each and everyone to observe the yartzeit of his great father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, of righteous memory.
In that letter the Rebbe writes, “There rests upon me both the obligation, as well as the great merit to propose, request, etc., that on this day there should be study of his Torah during the farbrengen and that tzedakah be given, l’zeicher nishmaso.”
Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was considered one of the greatest Talmudic and Kabbalistic scholars of his generation. He served as the chief rabbi of the city of Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, during the bloody Bolshevik revolution and the subsequent Communist oppression.
The Rebbe added, “Having had mesirus nefesh for the dissemination of Judaism among the Jews who were “behind the Iron Curtain,” for which reason he was incarcerated to exile, passing away while in exhile, which is where he is interred, may his merit protect us, and all of the Jewish people.”
Aguch has therefore provided an English translation of the Maamar entitled “Vehayah Eikev Tishma’un” said by the Rebbe on 20th of Menachem Av 5727 and which discusses his father’s teachings.
