The Jewish community of Brest – more commonly known as Brisk – in Belarus, celebrated the historic inauguration of a new Torah scroll 75 years after the last scroll was inaugurated.
The scroll was donated by the Mizrach, Leslboim and Prin families from Israel in memory of their father R’ Pinchas ben Yitzchok OBM.
The event, which opened in the Grand Synagogue famous for its great scholars, such as Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik OBM, was attended by hundreds of community members, distinguished guests, rabbis and government officials.
Following the inscribing of the final letters, the crowd stepped outside to dance with the Torah. The city’s Rabbi Chaim Rabinowitz praised the community’s revival after years of Nazi occupation and Soviet oppression.
He thanked the ongoing support of Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar and Rabbi Dovid Mundshine and Rabbi Eli Wolff of the Ohr Avner Foundation.
