With many in the Jewish world tracking the deteriorating health of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, a suggestion is being made to do something extra in his merit.
Rabbi Elyashiv, a revered leader of the Litvish community who is nearing the age of 102, is in critical condition after suffering from an organ failure at the Shaarei Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem.
“Due to R’ Elyashiv’s critical condition, we are asking all of Klal Yisroel, including yeshivos, kollelim and all schools, wherever to strengthen their learning and to continue their tefillos on behalf of R’ Elyashiv and all other cholim,” a letter from leading Litvish rabbis read.
Further more, the “Vaad Hayeshivos” requested that all yeshivos stop learning and say Tehillim for R’ Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha.
Rabbi Moshe Wiener, a Crown Heights resident who authored a few seforim on halacha, is calling for people to take upon themselves a psak by Rabbi Elyashiv in his merit.
“The Perhaps it is the right time for those davening for Rav Elyashiv to strengthen their adherence to his psak regarding the prohibition of using any electric shavers,” says Wiener, author of Sefer Hadras Ponim Zokon / The Cutting and Growth of the Beard in Halachic Perspective.
The encyclopedic work of over 1000 pages by Rabbi Wiener, a former talmid of the Mirrer Yeshiva, is the result of over 30 years of research proving that wearing a beard is in fact rooted in halacha and widely encouraged by rabbis from all generations.
On this matter, Rabbi Elyashiv stated at the time, quoting from the Chofetz Chaim in Likkutei Halachos on the end of Gemara Makkos:
“The Chofetz Chaim wrote that recently a machine had been introduced for shaving the hair, and, [using it for shaving the beard] is, in his opinion, close to [transgressing] a prohibition of the Torah itself.
“In our opinion, if this was the case in his [the Chofetz Chaim’s] time, when [the machine] was not so advanced and even the lowest setting did not give a very close shave, how much more so in our time when the machine works by electricity [giving a much closer shave], it is certainly considered destroying the hair in the manner prohibited by the Torah itself…”

great shiur thank you for the info
whers your decency , empathy and ahavas yisreol to anohter yid let alone a gadol btorah! just say thillim for him, or at least feel along with the rest of the jewish world thats worried about thier leader
anytime is a good time to talk the truth!
the torah and halacha were not given to us to practice or preach at out convenience. for that we have the reform!
As you may know, a kinnus tefillah as arranged in Kfar Chabad to say Tehillim for Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv shlita, the Posek Ha’Dor, who is in critical condition.
This is no time to, all of a sudden, start talking about this. Daven for his speedy Refuah Sheleima. Preach on another forum or occasion. Thank you.
[Reb Hillel Paritcher once explained that his dedication to maintaining his peyos and beard came from having seen a hand-written essay of the tzadik Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz, in which he wrote that adapting non-Jewish clothing styles and appearance was the 50th Gate of Impurity, which if the Jews had fallen one more level into it they would not have been able to be redeemed from Egypt. Similarly, in the times preceding the revelation of King Mashiach there will be an endeavor to make the Jews change their clothing and appearance, and unfortunately it will succeed. Only in the merit… Read more »
get your numbers stragiht if birhcas hachama happens every 28 years then
he was 16the first time
44 the second time
72 the third time
and 100 the 4th… thats FOUR times all together!!
i think you are the one who learnt in oholei torah 🙂
Apparently you didn’t learn the halacha correctly because it is every 28 years. I can see you don’t learn math either since even at his age he’d have to have been 112 not 103 for Birchas HaChama to even occur 4 times during his life, starting the year he was born when he wouldn’t have said it being a baby – duh.
However, backtracking, you can see Birchas HaChama only occured 3 times in his life.
I think we should learn Chassidus in his honor
he turned 100 last year on 1 nissan
he never left eretz yisroel since he arrived at age 12, but years ago had a connection to the rebbe, until 1989…
We should all daven and say tehillim and HaShem will help, because all bnei yisrael are a family, and may HaShem heal all those in need.
Moshiach now!
He was able say birchas hachamoh 4 times in his life.
What a pity he never came to the Rebbe, similar to how the Gaon never met the Alter Rebbe. He was 100 by birchas hachamoh so he must be 103.
Note his Mother’s name derives from Chaya Moussia (mushka)
He gave many haskomois, and should continue to do so, to Lubavitcher Seforim on halacho
Note his mothers name Chsya Musha (derives feom mushka)
That lubavitchers should listen to their rebbeim & stop touching their beards too!
