Some of us turn to tears, some of us to silence, yet all of us begin to reflect.
I am driven to words, for they are my only solace. And it is with words that I reflect too.
My zeidy was many things. But more than anything, he was a man of song, and of one particular song.
From the first time he sang sheyiboneh in front of the Rebbe, my zeidy loved the song. In it he saw a purpose, a mission, and a goal. He would sing it at rallies, practice it in his living room, and hum it before he would sleep.
For years on end, and even through the darkest times, my zeidy kept singing his song. He sang with hope, with promise, and with conviction, inspiring his audience to believe.
As his years grew on him, he kept singing his song, teaching his family to yet believe. He built a legacy, reminding us of our history, guiding us in the right direction, and willing us to fulfill the mission.
Now the song is quiet; my zeidy cannot sing it anymore. But he has taught us how to sing it, and together in chorus we turn to Hashem:
Speedily, in our days, may the beis hamikdosh be rebuilt.
Speedily, in our days, may we hear our zeidy sing his song one more time.
May it be speedily, in our days. Amen.
