Jewish children who attend the Gan Menachem Kindergarten and Beis Menachem School in Budapest can breathe a sigh of relief.
After years of the institutions’ rapid growth in a small building with limited options, the Hungarian government has come to their rescue.
A 5,000 square meter campus with a four story building on its premises was given to Lubavitch of Hungary as part of the authorities’ project of returning Jewish properties.
The important acquisition was given thanks to Rabbi Shlomo Koves, the Hungarian-born Chabad Shliach known for his extensive connections with government officials.
Ever since being ordained as the first Orthodox Jewish rabbi in Hungary since the Holocaust, Koves has been in the public spotlight.
He has been encouraging Jews to reconnect with their heritage, has spoken out against the rise of the far-right political parties and attended high profile meetings with the Head Shliach Rabbi Boruch Oberlander.
With the assistance of Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky in New York, the building has been renovated. The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews donated the security systems and cameras.
The school is directed by Mrs. Batsheva Oberlander, while the campus will be run by Rabbi Shmuel Glitsenstein.
“We have no doubt that with this large building, and the dedicated staff, the school will double and triple its accomplishment,” Glitsenstein said.
