President-elect Donald Trump has tapped New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a place that the Rebbe once referred to as “a place of deep darkness.”
Known for her staunch support of Israel and outspoken stance against antisemitism, Stefanik has been a prominent voice in Congress in recent months, notably defending Israel’s actions following the October 7 Hamas terror attacks.
Stefanik has been vocal in condemning the United Nations’ treatment of Israel, calling for the defunding of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, which she argues has been infiltrated by Hamas operatives.
“We need leadership at the UN that supports our ally Israel and pushes back against the institutional biases they face,” she said in a recent statement. Her stance aligns with Trump’s own criticisms of the UN, and her appointment is expected to bring a powerful pro-Israel perspective to the international body.
Stefanik was honored on Tuesday at the dinner of the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET), a pro-Israel advocacy group.
“We know that the UN is a den of antisemitism,” she said at the event. “Ever since and even before the barbaric terrorist attacks [from] Hamas on October 7, the UN has continuously betrayed Israel and betrayed America, acting as an apologist for Iran and their terrorist proxies.”
Her choice of words reminded some of what the Rebbe famously told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he served as Israel’s Ambassador at the UN.
“In 1984, after I came to the UN as Israel’s Ambassador, I met the Rebbe of Lubavitch,” Netanyahu once recalled. “He spoke to me for 40 minutes. He said, ‘You are going to a place of deep darkness and lies, and if you will light one candle of truth, you will dispel the darkness.'”
Stefanik’s appointment promises to carry forward that legacy of “lighting a candle of truth,” continuing the mission to defend Israel and combat antisemitism in one of the world’s most complex and challenging arenas.
U.S. Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania who is known as a fierce Israel defender, already announced that he will be confirming Stefanik’s nomination “to continue a strong and unapologetic pro-Israel position.”
