The girls swayed in a circle around the bonfire, their arms around each other and a palpable feeling of unity in the air. Bais Rochel Leah High School had organized its annual four-day exclusive retreat on Palomar Mountain, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The girls enjoyed a week of activities designed to nurture body and soul. Mrs. Srula Chaiton, an experienced facilitator of mindfulness workshops and curator of our retreat schedule, joined us to lead our trip.
Each day began with Tanya before davening and a mindful morning meditation based on Chassidus, using different techniques, such as grounding, breathwork, and tapping. The girls prepared insights on Tefillah that they shared with the group, setting a positive tone as students opened their minds and prepared to Daven amidst a picturesque backdrop. Throughout the retreat, the girls engaged in various workshops with Srula, seamlessly blending enjoyable activities like crafting floral vases with meaningful Torah-based discussions on personal growth. Seeing the finished product of beautiful flowers, knowing it started as a tiny seed, allowed the girls to visualize their growth and the steps needed, pulling inspiration from Jewish women in our history. “It was incredible to see how a change of environment can truly open up the girls to learning,” says Srula. “These girls are filled with questions, thirst for Torah, and a deep desire to grow and learn.” Other topics discussed were self-esteem, seeing ourselves as the inherently awesome beings we are, practical tips on creating the changes we want to see, and a deep dive into Bitachon. “Each workshop employed a distinct educational approach, utilizing text-based, discussion-oriented, project-focused, and action-driven learning methods. It was incredible how each girl connected differently in each workshop – truly showing the idea of ‘Al Pi Darko’. What an honor to learn and grow with these beautiful Neshamos!”
In addition to the workshops and mindful activities, the girls enjoyed a packed schedule of exhilarating physical adventures, making the most of the mountain’s stunning scenery. They trekked across picturesque landscapes, soaked in breathtaking views, explored boating adventures, and tapped into their creativity by painting ceramics in a dreamy art studio. Ensuring that every girl remained well-energized for the day’s adventures was equally prioritized through delicious, nutritious meals offering various options.
This retreat was a resounding success, as attested by students, teachers, and staff. “Being in nature and getting the chance to grow personally, with my friends, and the many fun activities we did, was different than anything I’ve ever done. Davening on the balcony in the mornings with the beautiful view around us was a breathtaking experience,” shared Charna Greenman, an 11th-grade student at Bais Rochel Leah.
The palpable unity felt during the Palomar Retreat epitomizes Bais Rochel Leah High School’s commitment to nurturing comprehensive growth and learning. Under the leadership of Rabbi Yitzchak Newman, the school’s holistic approach to education, as echoed by the Palomar retreat, and the addition of Mrs. Sara Rosenbluh as the Upper School Dean of Student Life contributes to the students’ positive experience. “It’s about creating an environment where academic excellence coexists with the warmth and vibrancy of Chassidishe life,” shares Rabbi Rapoport, Upper School Judaic Administrator. “Together, we ensure our girls are equipped for success in all walks of life, including seminary and beyond.”
From collaborating with their peers to plan the annual school production to assuming responsibility for celebrating every girl’s birthday, every single student, beginning with our 9th graders, is assigned various leadership positions throughout the year. This empowers them to utilize their talents and constantly hone their leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal communication skills.
The diverse extracurricular schedule is balanced out with a rigorous academic curriculum. Bais Rochel Leah is staffed with experienced, caring, and dedicated teachers who make it a personal goal to ensure every student is nurtured and supported. In the words of Rochi Lewcowicz, a 10th-grade student, “When you walk into school, it feels like you’ve joined your family. It’s a very warm, family-like environment. I feel safe, welcomed, and lucky to be part of such a great community.” Bais Rochel Leah leverages their intimate size to foster strong unity among students. Alongside the dedicated staff and thoroughly devoted Bnos heads, there’s a collective effort to support one another, contributing to the warm and welcoming atmosphere that defines the high school. Situated on a spacious 11-acre campus in Southern California and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as an x-STREAM, maker space, and private gym, Bais Rochel Leah ensures that every student is well prepared to excel in any endeavor they pursue.
