A Crown Heights family is facing a crisis. With two of their eight children in seminary and the other six in elementary school, high school and yeshiva, tuition costs — even after sizable discounts — are far more than they can afford.
Tuition for one or two children can be a challenge to working families, and tuition for eight can be incredibly expensive — more than a year’s rent, more than a typical salary pays. Add the burden of medical bills that this family owes for the care of one of their children, and the costs are beyond their reach. The parents are working full time and saving where they can, but the numbers simply aren’t adding up.
They’re doing their best, but the costs are overwhelming.
A campaign has been launched to raise $20,000 to help this local family pay their children’s tuition.
As Tisha B’Av approaches, let’s show our care for one another. Let’s demonstrate our ahavas chinam in a tangible way by uniting to help a family in need.

are these chabad schools?
I have no doubt that schools under the auspices of our Rebbe would only do the right thing to make sure our children continue getting a proper education… just as they would do for those we are trying to bring closer to being observant.
Otherwise why bother with shlichus and tanks?
True. But even with the discounts of our schools, the cumulative tuition costs for eight children ka”h is a huge stress.
Together, we can ease the financial tuition burden for this family.
every jew should be allowed to go to a jewish school
I’m sorry to tell you that this isn’t true. We are in the same situation and have had the most insulting things said to us and have had to rack up a fortune of debt.
Are all kids in local CH schools?
Is there scholarships in these Crown Heights school to pay some tuition?
why are tuitions so high anyway? They should only make people pay what they can afford to pay. Jewish school needs to be accessible for all jews.
That is true, however schools need to pay for mostly everything. Especially paying teachers salaries.
Why do these kind of fundraisers happen ? Why can’t the schools figure this out!??? The burden of tuition is so huge and so many people can’t afford it
As a Shliach, we have programs that are low cost and welcome everyone, even those who can’t pay. It is my Shlichus to fundraise and to assure that my programs are accessible to everyone. This is not the approach of the schools today. They will charge families 10k-20k per kid and reject the children if the parents can’t pay . It happened to me. It’s 100% against the Rebbe’s Shitah. Make a simple calculation for a family of 7 kids. 7 x 12k (average tuition) = 84k + camps, tickets, etc.. The average family of 7 is paying 70k-100k just… Read more »
they should make a sliding scale so the poor people don’t have to pay
Every Shliach needs to learn from Rabbi Avrohom Shemtov.
He fundraised and built CGI Parksville, Beis Rivka and even brought his baalei baatim to help expand 770.
Unfortunately modern shluchim would rather build buildings in their neighborhoods instead of reinvesting in chinuch shel tinokes shel beis rabon.
End of golus…
The rabbonim need to do something for the community.
All the gvirim need to raise funds to help.
If you don’t make at least 120k a year for a regular 5-6-7 ppl family, you’re in trouble right now.
Every month deeper and deeper in debt.
Even if you’re business could be you’re having great losses, or great expenses.
Whoever is on the big profit now needs to share and do real Tzedokah.
There are vouchers that are available that are much easier to get.
212-835-7610 ACS. There are so many struggling families in Crown Heights. Our tuition is $1000’s lower than out of state but we are supposed to pay our hardworking teachers a decent salary. Something is wrong
Fundraise for the schools so they can afford to give discounts.
Fact is NOBODY is able to afford tuition for all their kids except the super rich
All schools call me to raise money. Bnos Menechem, Bais Rivkah, Oheli Torah, Lubavitch Yeshiva and Darchai etc… all had campaigns this year…
As a family with 8 kids too, we had to take out a home equity loan to help cover the cost of tuition over the years. I feel bad for this family but a vast number of us is in the same boat
There is a major problem with priorities here. What is the purpose of funding millions for outreach projects, when there is not enough funding for our local Anash institutions?
OUR OWN CROWN HEIGHTS FUNDRAISE MILLIONS.
The local schools already charge less tuition than out of town schools, and schools are choking with expenses. We need the tzedaka of crown heights to start with supporting our own institutions first. Teachers need to get paid, buildings need to be able to stay open, and at the same time parents of large families just don’t have the means, there is no one to blame. We need to ask members of the community and beyond that have the means to understand the dire need to keep education at the top priority so that schools can keep tuition as low… Read more »
the lubavitch school system as created by the rebbes was that there was a director whose responsibility was to raise money. the system was not built to exist from tuition. parents would pay what they could. all students (except for exceptionally behaviorally disruptive ones) were accepted, regardless of their or their parents religiosity. Money was never a barrier. but there were (and perhaps are) only a handful of tomchei or achei tmiimim schools. other schools which present themselves as Lubavitch changed the model to tuition based and a filtered acceptance based on academics and religious observance. it’s almost like there’s… Read more »
Institutions are mistaken value with prices…and on top of that, those same institutions every so often proudly celebrate their new real estate acquisitions, as if it were their own achievements when in truth all the credit goes to the working parents that pay an exuberant amount of money with their sweat and very life, buried in debt stress shalom bais and all the goodies that come along with it…
in crown heights there are some schools
that care about each family the situation
will make sure the children stay even if they cant affod to pay
put your children in the schools
that care about your situation simple
Hey, maybe we can make a go fund me for almost every family in our schools for tuition!
By the way tuition out of town is much more expensive than in Crown Heights.
so sad to see families in stress, financial stress…tuition, rent, food…how we are going to end the cricis? is there any way to help locals to survive?
