Senator for New South Wales Andrew Bragg visited Newtown Synagogue in Sydney, Australia on Friday, July 17, to announce a $425,000 Federal Government Grant for security upgrades at the synagogue.
The Senator was greeted by Rabbi Eli and Rebbetzin Elka Feldman and representatives of the Synagogue Board of Management for a morning tea and tour of the synagogue.
Newtown Synagogue President Mr. Wolfie Pizem OAM said, “We are very grateful for the Government’s assistance which will enable us to enhance the safety and security of our community for now and into the future.”
“We are also grateful to William Nemesh from the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies for assisting us in the Grant application process.”
Senator Bragg was visibly very impressed with the beauty and charm of the 100-year-old Synagogue, Sydney’s second oldest to the Great Synagogue.
“It’s unfortunate that these security upgrades are necessary, but it’s better to be safe than sorry,” Rabbi Feldman said.
“The Australian government values the important role that Newtown Synagogue plays for the Jewish and wider communities and are pleased to do what it takes so that no one should ever be afraid to attend and participate at events and services at this important and vibrant community Centre,” he said.
Rabbi and Rebbetzin Feldman gave the Senator a tour of the Synagogue and thanked him on behalf of the Congregation for the Federal Government’s assistance.

“Our Synagogue is continuing to grow from strength to strength and this Grant underscores the Government’s recognition of the Synagogue’s important function in the life of the local Jewish and wider community as we enter into our second century.”
