2000 for New Year in Dharamshala

For the past eighteen years, Chabad Dharamshala in northern India, has provided for the spiritual and material needs of thousands, opening its doors to over 18,000 travellers each year.

Now, Rabbi Dror Shaul and his wife are preparing for the two thousand backpackers that are expected to spend Rosh Hashana in their Chabad House.

Most of these backpackers make the pilgrimage to India after their service in the IDF, seeking spiritual connection and inspiration. Unfortunately, without a good support system many turn to drugs or foreign religions.

The Shauls are launching a campaign to raise funds that will ensure that the Chabad House continues all their programming in 2019, helping young backpackers reclaim their Jewish roots in the midst of the Indian wilderness.

“Dear brothers and sisters, the Baal Shem tov always teaches us to love a Jew—even one you have never met. Today, that day has come to look after them,” Rabbi Shaul explains. “You have never met these people, the thousands of Israelis who come to India after the army. But today, you can help them find meaning and purpose in their heritage. Please help us fulfill our mission of filling this world with Yiddishkeit and join our campaign.”

Fundraising has consistently presented challenges for Dharamshala. This is not surprising for a Chabad House of its kind, which mainly services an ever-changing, migrant community of backpackers and student travellers. Establishing an ongoing relationship that will yield year-long support for the Chabad House is an ever-present struggle, and is dearly felt in this campaign.
