For teenagers, adolescence is about the search to define oneself and find a sense of belonging in a confusing world. Jewish education they can relate to is critical for this complicated time in their lives.
Jenny Butler, a teen from Jupiter, Florida, found a solution in her small hometown: JLI Teens.
“It seems nearly scandalous that one can learn so much about life in a simple teaching of religion,” she says, “Who knew? But last year’s session changed my perspective of Judaism and of life itself.”
JLI Teens, a division of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, knows what teens are looking for and have developed curricula for Jewish high school students. Using a combination of cutting-edge multimedia, critical thinking challenges and group discussion, JLI Teens knows how to speak the language of teenagers. Courses draw them in, and keep them coming. With chapters run by shluchim world-wide, the program has created a global network of students.
High school students everywhere are searching for the answers: How can I be successful? How can I figure out what I really want in life? JLI Teens is providing the answer with a brand new course launching this winter: Living Your Dream!
The course invites teens to question, learn, and probe deeply. It challenges teens to envision what their success will look like, to consider the challenges they will face to get there, and to discover within themselves the values that will guide them throughout their lives.
As Jenny remarks, “With JLI, it doesn’t feel like I’m in a classroom learning about the ideology of a religion. It feels as though I’m learning how to live my life the proper way, and finally implementing the true meaning of the word ‘Torah’ into my daily life.”
Course author, Rabbi Michoel Shapiro, explains his approach. “The common assumption that the average teenager is uninterested in Judaism is mistaken. The real problem is that most teens have not yet associated these topics with Judaism, but the moment they are presented with a Torah concept that they find truly meaningful, they internalize it and live with it!”
