Learning never ends, but has got to first start…
After days of negotiation, the principals at Associated Beth Rivkah Schools of Crown Heights have notified that they will be ending their strike and allowing for the new school year to finally begin.
Beth Rivkah Pre1A will start on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at 9:30 am. Grade 2 will begin on Wednesday at 9:30 am, with grade 3 set to start at 9:00 am.
On Thursday, September 15, grades Pre1A, 2 and 3 will begin at 9:00 am, while grades 1 and 6 will start at 9:30 am. Grade 7 will begin at 11:00 am and grade 8 will begin 1:00 pm – both were asked to daven at home.
High school will begin on Thursday.
Close to 2000 students were waiting for school to begin at the 2 locations: The early childhood center and elementary school at Campus Chomesh at 470 Lefferts Avenue and the high school, seminary and administrative offices at 310 Crown Street.
Principals refused to allow classes to begin until the faculty was paid up for past due salaries, even as a new board and a CEO began activity and promised to take responsibility.
Financial woes have led to a reshuffling at the executive level at the school. Education professional Chaim Botwinick is now CEO and Rabbi Moshe Pinson was named Director of Development.
Bais Rivkah, billed as the trailblazer of all-day Jewish education system for girls, was created in 1941 by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn OBM, the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, who appointed his son-in-law, the future Lubavitcher Rebbe as its Nosi.
In 1988, Rabbi Avraham Shemtov was appointed by the Rebbe as Chairman of the Board of Bais Rivkah and has since overseen and guided its tremendous growth.
Yerachmeal Jacobson, a member of the newly installed Board of Directors, told COLlive.com he is looking forward to a new, brighter future for the school.
Jacobson praised the principals who have been under pressure to make sure the school’s finances were in order before bringing teachers in for another year of work, but were faced with frustrated parents and students who are anxious to begin the school year.
“These principals are incredible, special people,” Jacobson said. “They were in tears from not seeing the students in school. Hopefully now it will be a new beginning for our children’s chinuch. We can look forward to seeing teachers and staff smiling and happy again.”
“This change was long overdue,” says Jacobson. “Unfortunately, sometimes you have to hit rock bottom in order to effect change and improve.”

When does high school start?
I am a 1st year teacher and I didn’t go on strike. Yet many teachers were once again not paid up and school would loose alot of teachers if not for the Principals standing up on their behalf and putting their foot down. So it goes hand in hand. We don’t know the full story so we don’t have the right to judge. Yes, Bais Rivka is the best school by far, with the most devoted and supportive principals who give their life for it like no other. We are so lucky to have the Mechanchim that we do. And… Read more »
Boruch Hashem!!
Correction: Bais Rivkah is the best school. I love it, and my girls love the school too. Go Benjy! Thank you for all of your work and caring for all the girls as if they are your own family. Thank you very much.
Most people these days have internet I mean we are living in the 21st century!
its about time
Mazel Tov – good news.
However, the title is misleading. The teachers never went on strike.
Question”
Why do they wait for school to start each year before negotiating their non existent pay? Why not deal with this in the summer?
As a daughter of a teacher in BRHS, I think it is important to note that the teachers did not strike. The teachers were informed that school wasn’t starting on time, just as everyone else was.
As the foremost source of news for much of lubavitch, you carry a huge achrayus to relay the information accurately.
Our tayere kinderlach in the Rebbe’s mosed are in the greatest of care under the teachers who are truly moser nefesh to give them a yiddishe and chassidishe chinuch. Let’s give them the credit they deserve and let everyone know what’s really going on.
I have had the privilage of working under chaim for a few years. I still till today reach out to him when ever possible for educational advice. He will make the teachers better teachers and the students better students. Beis rivka will become the best moised in lubavitch very soon.
For those who don’t have internet, notification was sent with smoke clouds and carrier pigeons.
May the Rebbe’s Mossad be endowed with mazel, bracha and hatzlocha. The school is now positioned for greatness. Lets look forward to a new year of successful accomplishment and high quality chinuch for our girls IYH.
It’s a good beginning , let’s hope it will be permanent
